The Bowling Green State University men's golf team hosts only one tournament every season – the John Piper Intercollegiate every September. Over the past several years, the team has parlayed this tournament into a staunch home-field advantage, enjoying some if its greatest successes at home.
With some help from the unpredictable weather of northwest Ohio, the Falcons appear to be well on their way to continuing that tradition.
After 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 7,064-yard course at Stone Ridge Golf Club, the Orange and Brown hold a dominating 11 shot lead over the field of 11 schools and 12 teams.
On Monday (Sept. 27), the Falcons secured the best team score in each of the day's two rounds. In the first round, Bowling Green had four scores of 74 or better and finished with a total of 291. BGSU improved by two strokes in the second round and had two players under par for the round. Their total of 289 game the team a score of 580 for the day.
The Falcons, who now have ten consecutive rounds with a team score under 300, lead the “A” team from Indianapolis by 11 strokes. Indianapolis sent two teams of five; their second team (598) is in fifth place, 18 strokes back.
Dayton and Eastern Kentucky are tied for third, 15 strokes behind the Falcons. Ohio University, the only other Mid-American Conference school in the tournament, is in ninth place after carding two rounds of 301 for the day.
If Bowling Green maintains their lead tomorrow, they will secure the second consecutive win at the John Piper for the school.
Individually, BGSU features three players in the top ten.
Junior Drew Preston is the tournament leader after the first day, playing the 36 holes to the tune of 139 (70-69). He threatens to win his second tournament in as years and also to become the third consecutive Falcon to win the John Piper.
Former Falcon star Matt Schneider won each of the previous two tournaments.
Despite the cold and occasional rain on the course, sophomore Wes Gates improved by six strokes from the first to the second round. His total of 146 (76-70) puts him in a tie for sixth place. Gates placed tenth at this tournament in his freshman campaign.
Parker Hewit, also a junior, set a career high with his 15th place finish last week at Louisville. Now, he aims even higher. Hewit enters the second day in a tie for tenth place, carding back-to-back rounds of 74 to earn a 148 for the day.
Charlie Olson stands only two strokes behind Hewit and rests in a tie for 22nd place with a total of 150 (74-76) for the day.
Freshman Chris Melvin posted a first-round 73, the team's second-best score of the round, and finished the day tied for 37th with a score of 152.
Three other Falcons are competing as individuals at this year's tournament.
Morgan Dobbins, a freshman in his first outing as a Falcon, is in a tie for 17th place, ten strokes behind Drew Preston. His round of 72 to close the day gave him 149 for the first 36 holes.
Redshirt junior Bryan Mitchell completed the day in a tie for 30th after shooting 151 (74-77). Meanwhile, Torey Brummett, also seeing his first action at Bowling Green, posted a total of 169 for the day.
The final 18 holes start, weather permitting, on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
A recap and complete results will be posted at BGSUFalcons.com shortly after the conclusion of the tournament.
