Rain Forces Cancellation of Tournament's Final Round
The third and final round of the 2010 John Piper Intercollegiate men's golf tournament, hosted by Bowling Green State University and played at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, has been cancelled due to rain.
Third round play began at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 28), after club officials determined that the course was playable. However, after continuous rain throughout Tuesday morning, play was halted shortly after 11:00 a.m. when the course became unplayable. Players had completed approximately eight of the rounds 18 holes.
No results from today's abbreviated play count. The final standings revert to the results from Monday's play.
Bowling Green captures the team championship at the John Piper for the second consecutive season. Their rounds of 291 and 289 were the best scores for each round, and the team total of 580 (+4) won the tournament by 11 strokes.
The Falcons have now won the John Piper in three of the previous six years and have six consecutive finishes of third place or better at the only home tournament of the team's season.
The "A" team sent by Indianapolis placed second, while Dayton and Eastern Kentucky tied for third.
Individually, junior Drew Preston won individual medalist honors by posting a total of 139 for the 36 holes of the rain-shortened tourney. Preston (-5) was the only player under par, and his round scores of 70 and 69 were the best for each round.
Preston captures his second tournament title, as he won the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate last September. He moves one win behind Ken Walters (1972-75) and former teammate Matt Schneider (2006-10) for most career victories by a Falcon.
With another win this season, Preston would equal Schneider's record for wins in one season (2).
Preston joins his former teammate Schneider in becoming the third consecutive BGSU player to win the individual title at the John Piper tournament. His win also gives BGSU four individual titles since the beginning of last season (Schneider 2, Preston 2).
Head Coach Garry Winger has now coached his players to nine individual tournament victories.
Wes Gates earned his second consecutive top-ten finish at home. He follows last year's tenth place finish with a tie for sixth in 2010. Gates produced rounds of 76 and 70 for a total of 146.
Last week in Louisville, Parker Hewit claimed a career high finish on a tournament leaderboard by placing 15th. This week, he set a new standard as he tied for tenth. Hewit carded back-to-back rounds of 74 for a final score of 148.
Sophomore Charlie Olson finished two strokes behind Hewit, placing in a tie for 22nd. Fellow Falcon newcomer Chris Melvin had the team's second-best score in the first round (73) and ultimately finished with a total of 152.
Bryan Mitchell, Morgan Dobbins and Torey Brummett each played as individuals. Mitchell, in only his second tournament since the 2008-09 season, scored 151 for a 30th place tie. Dobbins debuted in a tie for 17th place by scoring 149, including a final round of 72. Brummett's first tourney with the Falcons ended with a score of 169.
Bowling Green has two tournaments remaining in its fall schedule. After a two-week break, the team will travel to Hebron, Ky. for the (Cincinnati) Bearcat Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 11-12. The team travels back to Kentucky the following week for the APSU (Austin Peay) Intercollegiate to conclude the fall leg of the season's schedule.
