Gainesville, Fla. – The Albany volleyball team held off Bowling Green Saturday night in the Falcons' final match at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida, by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 27-25.
Three Falcons had double-doubles, led by freshman Paige Penrod's 11 kills and 10 digs. Laura Avila had 20 assists and 13 digs, while Ashley Dunn added 12 assists and 15 digs. Danielle Tonyan led BGSU with 12 kills and Noelle Spitler had eight kills, two aces, and two blocks. Penrod was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.
Bowling Green fell behind 7-1 early in the opening set but charged back to tie the score at 18-18 on a Spitler and Penrod block. With the score still tied at 21-21, the Falcons had a service error before Albany had a block and two kills for the set victory.
In the second set, Bowling Green jumped out on top early and led 18-14 until Albany went on an 11-3 run to close the set. During that stretch, Albany scored four in a row to tie it at 18-18 and then scored the final four points after it was tied 21-21.
The Falcons fell behind 13-5 in the third set but chipped away at the lead. Albany led 24-22 before kills by Emily Kauth and Susie Isphording tied the score. Dunja Prgomet had a kill to give Albany a 25-24 lead before Isphording had another kill to tie the score. But Prgomet had another kill and Bowling Green had an attack error to end the match.
Albany improves to 3-4 on the season with the win. Bowling Green falls to 1-6 and will host its own tournament during the upcoming weekend in the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational. Bowling Green will play Cornell Friday night at 7 p.m. in the first match of 2010 in Anderson Arena during the final season of the building.
