Louisville Tops Falcons, 7-0, in Dual-Match Opener

BGSU's two freshmen team up for a doubles win
Host University of Louisville swept all six singles flights en route to a 7-0 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (Jan. 21). The contest, the dual-match opener for each team, was held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Falcons' lone win came at the second doubles flight, courtesy of the team's two freshmen. Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland teamed up for a narrow win over the Cardinals' duo of Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris.
At the third flight, sophomores Mary Hill and Katie Grubb battled the U of L's Sarah Miller and Sonia Bokhari in a close match before falling by an 8-6 result.
Although the Cardinals swept the singles matches, the outcome was not as lopsided as the score would indicate. BGSU battled the hosts to a third set in three of the six matches. Hill lost a close super-tiebreaker, 10-8, after splitting her first two sets with Mandy Brown at the second flight.
Likewise, in third-flight action, Nikki Chiricosta and Becca Shine split their first two sets, before Shine was the first player to 10 points in the 'breaker. At the fourth flight, Reuland and Kaysara Mandry played a full third set, with Mandry pulling out a 7-5 result.
The Falcons remain in Louisville for a Saturday (Jan. 22) matchup with West Virginia. The team then returns to Northwest Ohio to prepare for the dual-match home opener. BG will face Cleveland State next Friday (Jan. 28) at 6:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
