Toledo, Ohio – A'uston Calhoun posted his first career double-double and Joe Jakubowski scored a season-high 16 points as the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team beat arch-rival Toledo Tuesday night 70-64.
Although the game was close throughout, Bowling Green did not trail after the first three minutes of the contest, jumping out to a 16-6 lead and holding off a Toledo team that hit big shots to hang close throughout.
Calhoun scored eight points early as the Falcons jumped out to that 10 point lead just over eight minutes into the contest but Bowling Green then went scoreless for almost seven minutes as Toledo scored nine straight to get back in the contest. From there, neither team held a double-digit lead again.
The Falcons led 27-21 at the half and built the lead to seven on a Jakubowski three-pointer 86 seconds into the second half at 32-25. But the Rockets battled back with seven in a row to tie the game. Scott Thomas answered with two free-throws and Calhoun knocked down a jumper to give Bowling Green a 36-32 lead.
Every time the Falcons looked to build a comfortable cushion, Toledo hit a big shot the rest of the way. With Bowling Green holding a 45-40 lead with 9:10 to go, Anthony Wright knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two.
The Falcons again threatened to put the game away with a 51-45 lead with 6:20 to go but Zack Leahy hit a three to make it a one possession game. A Thomas jumper with 3:51 to go made it 58-51 but Malcolm Griffin hit a three-ball to make it a four-point game. But Toledo eventually ran out of time as the Falcons made nine of their last 10 free-throw attempts for the six-point win.
Calhoun finished with 21 points and a career-best 13 rebounds, along with four assists, two blocks and two steals. Jakubowski made four three-pointers and was perfect on four free-throw attempts to finish with 16 points, four assists and two steals. Thomas played 38 minutes and had 11 points and seven rebounds. Torian Oglesby had six points, on three dunks, and six rebounds.
Bowling Green shot 43 percent from the floor, including a strong 58 percent in the second half, to hold off a Toledo team that shot 40 percent from the field and made 9-of-20 three-pointers. The Falcons had a 39-33 rebounding advantage and had 11 turnovers, four less than the Rockets.
Toledo falls to 4-16 overall and 1-5 in MAC play. Bowling Green improves to 9-11 overall and remains in a tie for first place in the MAC East at 4-2. The Falcons will host Eastern Michigan Saturday at 3 p.m. for Coaches vs. Cancer.
