BGSU senior co-captain now has 153 combined career wins
Bowling Green State University senior Christine Chiricosta tied the school wins record as the Falcon tennis team rolled along to a 7-0 win at IUPUI Saturday night (Jan. 29). The non-conference dual match was held at the Five Seasons Sports Club.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-1 in dual matches this season, while the Jaguars drop to 0-4.
Chiricosta teamed up with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for an 8-0 win at the top doubles flight, then lost only two total games in a sweep of Vanessa Whyte at the number-one singles flight. The latter win was the 153rd of her BGSU career, moving her into a tie with Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) for the most combined career victories in program history.
Chiricosta's teammates all won by large margins as well. The only close match of the night came at the second doubles flight, where BGSU's two freshmen won in a tiebreaker. At the third flight, sophomores Katie Grubb and Mary Hill won by an 8-0 score. That result, as well as the Chiricosta/Eccleston victory at the top flight, clinched the doubles point for the Brown and Orange.
With the point decided, the second-flight match saw the competitors battle to a 7-7 tie, before playing a tiebreaker (rather than the standard win-by-two-games format). BGSU's frosh, Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, won that 'breaker by a 7-1 score.
In singles, Eccleston did not lose a game in her sweep of Jesika Bays at the fifth flight. Two of Eccleston's teammates, Reuland and junior Jessica Easdale, each lost just one game. Reuland lost one game in her opening set en route to a sweep at the fourth flight, while Easdale won her sixth-flight match, dropping just one contest in her second set.
Hill won at the second flight, by scores of 6-3, 6-2, while Nikki Chiricosta lost only two total games in her victory at flight number three.
Christine Chiricosta now has career totals of 77 singles wins and 76 doubles victories. She is tied for fourth in singles victories, and is just four wins shy of matching that school record.
Her doubles wins total is the second highest all-time at BGSU, and puts her eight away from tying that school mark.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean remain in Indianapolis for a Sunday (Jan. 30) match against Butler. That contest begins at noon at the Butler Bubble.
