Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Buffalo after dropping the final two sets Saturday. The Falcons came up on the short end of a 19-25, 25-23, 29-31, 25-20, 15-13 decision.
Paige Penrod had a season-high 22 kills and Danielle Tonyan added 21 but Buffalo edged the Falcons with strong defense at the net and a tough service game. The Bulls had 11.0 blocks, compared to just 4.0 for Bowling Green, and added nine aces. Carissa McKenna ended with six of those blocks and Dani Reinert had three aces.
The Falcons actually outhit Buffalo, posting a .310 attack percentage, helped by a phenomenal .618 in the third-set win. Buffalo hit .289 but that came on the heels of an .032 first set.
After the two teams split the opening two sets, Bowling Green appeared to take momentum in a critical third set. The Falcons trailed by as many as nine points in the stanza and were behind 20-13 before taking over. Penrod had four kills during a seven-point run that helped Bowling Green tie the score. The Bulls, though, led 24-22 before Tonyan had back-to-back kills. Buffalo again led 29-28 before Penrod and Tonyan had kills on consecutive points and Laura Avila closed out the frame with an ace.
But Buffalo bounced back with a 25-20 win in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth. Tied at 8-8 in the final frame, the Bulls scored three straight. Bowling Green came back to cut the deficit to one at 13-12 but Buffalo scored on a Dana Musil kill to make it 14-12. A service error opened the door for a Bowling Green comeback but the Falcons' attempt at a block on match point fell just out of bounds and Buffalo came away with the win.
Ashley Dunn had a team-high 17 digs and Penrod finished with a double-double, posting 12 digs to go with her 22 kills.
Buffalo improved to 9-9 on the year and 2-2 in MAC play with the win. Bowling Green falls to 15-2 and 2-2 in conference play. The Falcons will be at home again Thursday when they host Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m.
