HEBRON, Ky. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team completed their five-tournament fall schedule on Tuesday (Oct. 11) with a disappointing 15th-place finish at the 2011 Bearcat Invitational.
The Falcons' highest-seeded players struggled throughout the first half of their season, and that issue reached its apex this week at Hebron, Ky.'s Traditions Golf Club.
Despite fielding a team that featured four players who competed in the Bearcat invitational in 2010, Bowling Green posted a composite 910 (309-299-302) over the two-day, 54-hole event. The score, which earned 15th place in the 15-team field, was 28 shots higher than the team's 2010 total.
Senior Drew Preston, the team's top seed, carded a 75 during Monday's second round. It was his best round in a month, but it was sandwiched between rounds of 82 and 79. The 54-hole total (236) was Preston's highest since his sophomore season.
Fellow senior Parker Hewit finished the tournament strongly after starting the event with an opening-round 80. He closed play on Monday with a 74 and then shot even-par 72 on Tuesday for a final tally of 226.
Like Preston, Wes Gates also had his highest 54-hole total since the spring of 2010 after shooting 235 (77-78-80).
Torey Brummett (79-77-79) matched Gates' score in his first trip to the Traditioins Golf Club as a Falcon.
Perhaps the brightest point for the Falcons is the continued good play of third-seed Charlie Olson. Olson finished tenth at the Bearcat Invitational after posting a 218 (73-73-72) this week.
Olson now owns two top-10 and four top-20 finishes out of five events. He has shot 74 or better in seven consecutive rounds and has five rounds of par or better out of a possible 14.
As a team, the Falcons ended the Bearcat Invitational four strokes behind Oakland, their nearest competition. The team finished 11 shots behind Ohio University, the only other Mid-American Conference team in the field.
Austin Peay (868) won the team championship by one stroke over Kentucky. Georgetown's Brian Dorfman (210) won individual medalist honors after defeating Cincinnati's David Tepe in a one-hole playoff.
Bowling Green ends the fall schedule with a cumulative average of 300.21 through 14 rounds, which equals an individual per-round average of 75.05.
Olson now leads the team with a 74.57 average. Hewit follows at 74.93, while Preston's 75.71 average is third on the team. The fourth member of the roster to play in all 14 rounds this season is Gates, and he owns a 75.93 per-round mark.
The Falcons return to action in four months with an exhibition match-play event against a to-be-determined MAC team. The event will be held on Dade City, Fla. on Feb. 13-14. Following that, the team will travel to Pauma Valley, Calif. for the Triumph at Pauma Valley on March 12-13.
