Toledo, Ohio – Danielle Tonyan tied her career high with 23 kills and Emily Kauth added 16 as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21 win on the road over rival Toledo Friday night. The win was head coach Denise Van De Walle's 525th in her illustrious career.
Bowling Green used two huge runs to turn the match around. The Falcons scored 12 in a row in the first set and used a 10-1 run in the third to take control of each frame.
Tonyan and Kauth combined for six kills during the first-set run that allowed Bowling Green to fight back from a 7-2 deficit to take a 14-7 lead. From there, Toledo never threatened and the Falcons were out on top early.
After hitting just .098 in that first set, Toledo rebounded to attack at a .548 clip in the second and the Rockets rolled to a 25-16 win to even the match back up.
It appeared that Toledo had the match well in hand as the Rockets built a 19-12 lead in the third. The Falcons were scuffling but a Lindsey Butterfield kill started a comeback. Laura Avila followed with an ace and the Falcons went on a 6-0 run to get to within one at 19-18. Toledo appeared to stop the bleeding with a kill that made it 20-18 but Bowling Green answered with five more points to take a 23-20 lead. A service error and a Tonyan kill gave the Falcons the 25-21 win.
In the fourth set, Bowling Green trailed 10-8 when Lauren Mizgalski, Kari Galen and Tonyan all had kills during a 5-0 stretch that gave the Falcons a 13-10 lead. Toledo never got closer than two points the rest of the way and the Falcons closed out the match with a Kauth kill.
After struggling offensively during the team's four-match losing streak, Bowling Green hit .293 in the match, posting 11 more kills than Toledo. Tonyan hit .340 for the match and Kauth was at a stellar .500. In all, five Falcons had at least seven kills with Paige Penrod totaling eight and Mizgalski and Galen adding seven each. BGSU also had six more digs than the Rockets and was paced by Ashley Dunn with 19.
Toledo falls to 7-14 on the season and 2-7 in MAC play. Bowling Green improves to 17-6 overall and 4-5 in conference action. With Miami's loss tonight, the Falcons move into sole possession of second place in the East Division. Bowling Green will play at MAC leader Ball State Saturday night at 7 p.m.
