Falcons Rally, Come Up Short Against Western Michigan

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team rallied to win the third set but the Falcons came up short in a four-set loss to Western Michigan Saturday evening 25-16, 25-9, 22-25, 25-19.
Bowling Green struggled offensively in the first two sets, hitting .114 and -.074 in the first two frames respectively. The Falcons rebounded by hitting .286 in the third and .333 in the fourth. Unfortunately, Western Michigan hit .362 for the match, including .455 in the deciding fourth set.
Neither of the first two sets were ever close as Western Michigan came out on fire to take control of the match. But after the two teams went to the locker room to close out the second set, Bowling Green got things turned around.
The Falcons scored the first four points of the third set, sparked by a pair of kills from freshman Erica Fullenkamp. Western Michigan was never able to get it tied, but did close to within one at 12-11. Bowling Green used a timeout and then got a kill from Lindsey Butterfield followed by a block from Paige Penrod and a kill from Penrod. From there, the Falcons put the set away.
In the fourth, Bowling Green stayed close early and the set was tied at 10-10. However, Western Michigan used a mini 3-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
Penrod ended the match with a team-high 13 kills and Danielle Tonyan added 10 kills. Ashley Dunn led the way with a match-high 17 digs but the Falcons were outdug 56-42 as a team. Bowling Green also had just one ace, compared to eight for the Broncos.
Western Michigan improves to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in Mid-American Conference play with the win. Bowling Green falls to 16-3 overall and 3-3 in MAC action. The Falcons will host Central Michigan Friday at 7 p.m. and Eastern Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m.
