Bowling Green, Ohio – A veteran Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will host Tiffin Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Stroh Center for the team's final warm-up heading into the season opener Nov. 11 against Howard.
The Stroh Center is one of five new NCAA Division I arenas to open for the 2011-12 season (along with Evansville's Ford Center, UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena, Stony Brook's Pritchard Gymnasium, and UT Arlington's College Park Center, which is set to open in February) and is named for Kermit and Mary Lu Stroh, who donated $7.7 million as the lead gift for the project.
The Falcons return all five starters and seven players who started at least nine games a year ago. Along with the veteran leadership, Bowling Green boasts six true or redshirt freshmen who should provide talent and depth to the core group of returners.
Head coach Louis Orr begins his fifth year at the helm of the Falcons. He also has a veteran staff around him in eighth-year assistant LaMonta Stone, fourth-year assistant Louis Twigg, and third-year assistant Dennis Hopson.
Seniors Scott Thomas and Dee Brown are the only remaining members of the 2008-09 Mid-American Conference champions and they are expected to have big roles as seniors. Both averaged more than 10.0 points per game a year ago and Thomas was named NABC Second Team All-District in 2010-11.
The other senior on the team is second-year player Torian Oglesby, who transferred after playing two years at Mott Community College. Oglesby started 16 games last year and shot 56 percent from the field.
The junior class is led by A'uston Calhoun, and All-MAC honorable mention performer a year ago, who led the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Point guard Jordon Crawford is a dynamic sparkplug and shooting guard Luke Kraus is a weapon on the perimeter and is a defensive stalwart. James Erger also returns after playing in 25 games a year ago.
Sophomores Cameron Black and Craig Sealey are primed to have big second-years with the Falcons. Black was hampered by injuries a year ago but is a legitimate post threat. Sealey showed flashes of potential and impressive athleticism as a freshman and is ready to contribute on a consistent basis this year.
Redshirt freshman Anthony Henderson sat out the 2010-11 season but is a first team all-state player from Start High School in Toledo. He is a scoring threat every time he touches the basketball.
Freshman Jehvon Clarke and Desmond Rorie both come from Timken High School. Clarke was a second team all-state player and will have the opportunity to earn minutes at point guard. Rorie is developing his game as a post player and is a defensive factor inside.
Two other freshmen, Damarkeo Lyshe and Antonio Ferrell Jr., have been added to the team as walk-ons and will add depth to the team.
Tiffin plays at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC). The Dragons went 8-18 a year ago in 6-13 in conference play but do return four starters, including their top three scorers from 2010-11.
Tickets for the exhibition game start at $7 and are available through the BGSU Ticket Office online at BGSUFalcons.com or by phone at 877-BGSU TICKET. The exhibition game is included as part of season ticket holders' ticket package.
Following the exhibition game, Bowling Green will host the first regular season basketball game in the Stroh Center on Friday Nov. 11 (11-11-11) against Howard at 7 p.m. Veterans will receive free admission to the contest.
