Akron, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team greatly improved its chances of advancing to the Mid-American Conference Tournament by defeating Akron Saturday evening 25-21, 25-16, 25-14.
At 6-8 in MAC play, the Falcons currently hold sole possession of seventh place for the opportunity to make the eight-team MAC Tournament. With just two matches remaining, Bowling Green holds a one-match lead over Miami and two-match leads over Buffalo and Toledo. Due to Buffalo's two wins over the Falcons, the Bulls would hold a tiebreak advantage. However, the Falcons hold a tiebreak advantage over Toledo and Miami, though BGSU still plays Miami during the final weekend of conference play.
Bowling Green rolled past Akron with a dominant offensive performance, hitting a season-best .484 for the match. In fact, it is the highest single-match attack percentage since the Falcons hit .553 in a win over Buffalo in 2007.
Paige Penrod led the way with 15 kills in 24 swings (without an error) for a .625 attack percentage. Danielle Tonyan added 12 kills and Emily Kauth had 10. Defensively, Ashley Dunn had 17 digs as the Falcons held a 32-23 edge in that category. Kari Galen had a part in all five of the Falcons' blocks for the match.
Akron was never competitive in the final two sets after Bowling Green set the tone by hitting .412 in the first set. The Zips led 11-9 in that opening frame but the Falcons scored six in a row on two Galen kills and a block to go ahead 15-11. Akron did inch back into the contest to eventually tie the set at 21-21 but the Falcons got a Penrod kill and an Akron attack error to go ahead 23-21. Tonyan had a kill and Penrod finished it off with another kill for the 25-21 win.
With the loss, Akron falls to 4-23 on the year and 1-13 in conference play. Bowling Green is now 19-9 needing one more win for 20 on the year. The Falcons will play at Miami Thursday at 7 p.m. and will close out the regular season with Senior Day Saturday against Northern Illinois at 2 p.m.
