In their first competitive action in four months, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team took ninth place out of a 15-team field at the 2011 Rice Intercollegiate, which was held at the Westwood Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
The team finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a final score of 876. The Falcons carded a 293 on the final day of the event, following rounds of 293 and 290 on Monday (Feb. 21). The total score was enough to defeat Mid-American Conference foe Miami (884, T-12th) and Nebraska (878, 10th), currently of the Big 12 Conference.
Drew Preston, a junior from Ada, Mich., entered the final round in a tie for second place (72-67), one shot behind the leader. Preston was able to maintain that tie for second with a one-under-par 71. He finished his 54-holes at six under par (210),
One highlight of the final round was the resurgence of sophomore Charlie Olson. Olson, who won the team's final tournament of the fall, started the week in Houston with scores of 81 and 83. However, he responded on Tuesday with a final-round 72, tied for BGSU's second-best round of the tournament.
Wes Gates finished second among the five Falcons to compete. He carded a 75 in the final round for a tournament total of 222 (74-73-75) and a tie for 41st place. Chris Melvin also fired a 75 on Tuesday; his first-round 76 is the only difference between his score and Gates'. Melvin's final tally of 224 earned 54th place.
Junior Parker Hewit (Westfield, Ohio) scored 79 in the final round. Coupled with rounds of 71 and 77 on Monday, Hewit tallied 227 strokes over the 54 holes.
Bowling Green's next action will be in two weeks, when the team travels to Orlando, Fla. to compete over BGSU's spring break.
