BGSU Swimmers Compete Well, Win Seven of 14 Swimming Events
MEET RESULTS (.htm)
The Boiwling Green State University swimming team closed out the 2010-11 regular season on Friday night (Feb. 4) with a very respectable loss to the Michigan State Spartans on MSU's home turf.
The final score of the dual meet in East Lansing, Mich. was 165-129, but that tally hides good tidings for the Falcons. Bowling Green won seven of the night's 14 swimming events and kept the final score of those 14 events nearly even, trailing only 133-129.
In fact, the Falcons led the meet, 72-59, after seven events.
Six of Bowling Green's victories on the night were in individual events. Four of those came via Alexa Harris and Alexis Kain, who each swept their signature events.
Harris overcame an early deficit in the 100 backstroke to dominate the final 50 yards. Her time of 58.92 was nearly a second better than that of Samantha Hilk of MSU, who placed second. In the 200 backstroke, Harris was even better. She built a one second lead after just 50 yards and led by two seconds halfway through the race. Harris cruised from there to finish in just 2:06.62.
In the breaststroke events, Kain followed a similar path as Harris. In the 100 yard event, Kain charged over the final 50 yards to win by one of the slimmest of margins -- just 17 hundredths of a second. Her time (1:03.97) fell less than a tenth of a second shy of establishing a new personal best in the event. Later, Kain won the 200 in easier fashion, defeating Kerry Sodonis of the Spartans by over a second. Kain built her lead early and withstood a furious finish from Sodonis to finish in 2:19.82.
The final two individual wins were by Andrea Brown and Vicky Yu.
Brown won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.19, by nearly a second over the MSU runner-up. Brown actually trailed teammate Emily Bennet after 50 yards, but Brown won the remaining three 50-yard splits to earn victory. Brown also raced in the 500 freestyle, placing fourth.
Yu won the 200 butterfly comfortably, defeating the Spartans' Becca Ebner by over 2.5 seconds. Yu's time of 2:04.11 included event-best times in each of the four 50-yard splits. Later, Yu placed second in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 0:57.34, a half-second behind Ebner. Yu placed fourth in the 200 individual medley.
Harris, Kain, Yu and Emily Bennet combined to win the opening event of the night, the 400 medley relay. The team completed the distance in 3:51.04, winning by six-tenths of a second.
For the evening, the Falcons earned second place a total of six times (five individual, one relay), while eight different third-place finishes were achieved.

The Falcons (3-4 overall) now turn their attention to the 2011 Mid-American Conference championship meet. That will commence in just shy of three weeks in Athens, Ohio. The team will compete from Feb. 23 through Feb. 26.
