Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team saw the 2010-11 season come to a close with a 67-56 loss to Western Michigan Thursday afternoon in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals, held at Quicken Loans Arena. It is the second consecutive season that Western Michigan ended the Falcons' season.
Bowling Green fell behind early and was never able to fully recover. The Falcons trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, cut the deficit to seven by the break, but never got closer. Junior Dee Brown had a game-high 17 points.
Western Michigan's Demetrius Ward knocked down a pair of transition three-pointers to give the Broncos an 8-2 lead and Bowling Green's leading scorer A'uston Calhoun picked up two fouls in the first 4:45. Danny McElroy replaced Calhoun but he earned a pair of fouls over the course of the next six minutes.
At that point, Bowling Green head coach Louis Orr rolled the dice and put Calhoun back into the game with the Falcons trailing 20-14 and 9:14 left in the first half. He quickly sparked the team by knocking down a three-pointer, the only successful attempt of the game for the team, but picked up his third foul with 7:52 left.
That foul sent Calhoun to the bench for the remainder of the half and Western Michigan promptly went on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 13. Bowling Green held the Broncos scoreless over the final 3:56 and closed the deficit to seven by the half at 33-26.
In the second half, Western Michigan quickly built a double-digit lead on a Mike Douglas three-pointer and pushed the lead to as much as 16 midway through the period. The Falcons tried to rally late as McElroy scored 11 points in the final 3:20 but the team got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Brown was 7-of-13 shooting for his 17 points and added five rebounds and two assists. McElroy finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had five rebounds as well. Calhoun scored 10 points in just 23 minutes with foul trouble. Only six players scored for the Falcons and the team committed 13 turnovers, five more than Western Michigan. Bowling Green was also 1-of-12 from three-point range.
Western Michigan improves to 20-11 with the win and Bowling Green's season comes to a close at 14-19. For two seniors, Joe Jakubowski and Mike Dabney, their careers came to a close with the loss. Jakubowski ends his career ranking among the top 10 in program history in assists, steals, and three-pointers made.
