The Bowling Green State University women's golf team honored a portion of the program's rich history on Saturday evening (April 16th) following the first round of the team's annual home tournament at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The guest of honor at the celebratory banquet was former Falcon head coach Dolores Black, who guided the team from 1969 to 1976. At the close of the evening, current coach Stephanie Young announced that the tournament's name would now be known as the Dolores A. Black Falcon Invitational.
Black coached several championship-level teams and individuals, and she guided players to prestigious regional and national tournaments.
Her teams won back-to-back Ohio Invitational tournaments in 1972 and 1973. The following year, the team placed second in that tournament. In the 1972 win, Sue Barkhurst won individual medalist honors.
Black led players to the AIAW National Tournament in both 1973 and 1975. Jill Wilhelm traveled to the event at the University of Georgia in 1973, while Peg Gibbons and Karen Parshall played in the tournament at Michigan State in 1975.
In the book Forward Falcons, a history of women's sport at BGSU, Noel Jablonski provided quotes about Coach Black. Jablonski played at BGSU from 1967 to 1971.
"I have many wonderful memories about the BG golf team. It was great fun to pile four or five of us and all our gear into Ms. Black's big ol' car to drive across the Midwest to compete in Illinois and Indiana," she said. "We stayed in motels, ate in restaurants, and developed friendships with players from other schools. We had to manage our schoolwork and time, cooperate with one another, and encourage each other."
Jablonski also related a story about how Black convinced the College of Education to provide money for a trip to a national tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.; the trip included air travel, and the plane ride was Jablonski's first.
Current head coach Stephanie Young said about Black, "On behalf of BGSU women's golf, it's a privilege to announce this event dedication in honor of Dolores Black. The Falcon Invitational will be named in appreciation for all of Coach Black's service and contributions to the BGSU women's golf program. She played a big part in building a foundation for the program we have today. Teaching was her primary aim with her student-athletes both on and off the golf course. Black's players learned far more than the game of golf and it is evident in the respect and long lasting relationships she has with them to the present day."
The ceremony concluded with remarks from Coach Black.
Prior to the dedication, other alumni from several generations of Falcon golfers were recognized, and current members of the team were honored for their academic achievements, as they were not able to attend the annual honors banquet for BGSU athletes.
