THE COMPETITION
Detroit enters the week with a record of 5-25 overall and is 0-10 in Horizon League play. The Titans are hitting just .215 as a team and Erin Huddleston leads the team with a .288 average. She is also the team leader with four home runs. Detroit has used four pitchers extensively and all have ERA's higher than 5.00. Karyn McCarty leads the team with a 2-4 record and a 5.69 ERA. Julia Maksym has thrown the most innings on the team, with 60.1, but she has the highest ERA among the four pitchers at 7.89.
Northern Illinois enters the week with a record of 18-19 overall and 8-3 in MAC play. The Huskies have two players hitting over .400 with Carly Norton at .432 and Stephanie Tofft at .423. Adriana Sanchez leads the team with seven homers and the Huskies have hit 26 as a team. On the mound, Morgan Bittner leads the way with a 4.53 ERA and an 8-10 record. Nicole Gremillion and Whitney Owens have split the rest of the innings but both have ERA's above 5.00.
Western Michigan is 12-24 overall and 6-4 in conference action. Lexi Jager is one of two hitters over .300 with a .339 batting average and four home runs. Tara Buchanan leads the team with five bombs but is only hitting .262 on the year. Meredith Whitney has been solid on the mound with a 3.56 ERA and Kayla Houston has a 4.23 ERA. Both pitchers have struck out almost 100 batters on the year.
SERIES HISTORY
Bowling Green is 32-7 all-time against Detroit but the two programs have not met since 2008 and the Falcons swept a doubleheader that season. Bowling Green head coach Shannon Salsburg is 6-0 all-time against the Titans and the Falcons have won 10 consecutive meetings overall. Against Northern Illinois, Bowling Green is 20-17 all-time and split last year's series at Meserve Field. Salsburg is 7-5 in her career against the Huskies. Finally, BGSU is 29-43 all-time against Western Michigan with a split of last year's season series. Salsburg is 5-4 all-time against the Broncos.
SHAKING OUT THE MAC
At 1-9 in league play, Bowling Green has little room for error if the Falcons want to make a run at the MAC Tournament. Ohio currently sits in the eighth and final spot for the MAC Tournament with a record of 4-5, 3 ½ games in front of the Falcons. Kent State leads the MAC East Division at 6-2. Bowling Green is just one game behind both Toledo and Akron in the league standings.
ADDING TO THE LEGEND
Sophomore Paige Berger has put up some remarkable numbers for having played less than two years at the collegiate level. As a freshman, she was named MAC Freshman of the Year after setting the program record with 12 home runs. This past week she had the second multi-home run game of her career with two in game one of the doubleheader at No. 24 Notre Dame. Those blasts gave her eight this season and 20 for her career, moving her into third place all time at Bowling Green. She is six behind Gina Rango (26 homers from 2003-06) and just 12 behind current pitching coach Hayley Wiemer-Bradford (32 homers from 2006-09) for the all-time school record.
TWO OF A KIND
Sophomore Hannah Fulk has done it all for Bowling Green this year, from leading the team in batting average, leading off in the lineup, to playing one of the toughest positions defensively at shortstop and committing just three errors. But Fulk has done something else that only one other player in all of NCAA Division I softball has done. Fulk homered off of Michigan's Stephanie Speierman, who is currently 17-0 with a 1.65 ERA, has given up just two home runs all year.
GOTTA HAVE GLOVE
With a .968 fielding percentage, Bowling Green ranks a solid third in the MAC. BGSU's defense has been strong all year as the team has turned seven double plays (tied for fourth most in the league) and thrown out 17 would-be base stealers (second most in the MAC). The Falcons have committed more than two errors in a game just once this year and has had 14 errorless games.
