Minutewomen Get Past Falcons, 2-1, on Senior Day
April 25, 2026 | Softball
BGSU concludes home schedule with Tuesday twinbill vs. Oakland
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the sixth inning, and the Minutewomen went on to a 2-1 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Saturday afternoon (April 25) at Meserve Field, in the final game of the teams' Mid-American Conference series.
The Minutewomen (18-27, 9-15 MAC) had taken the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Falcons (18-26, 6-17) tied the score in the bottom of the inning, on a two-out single by senior Ashley Chevalier on Senior Day.
Chevalier was 5-for-10 at the plate for the Falcons on the weekend.
Hannah Streicher picked up the complete-game win for the visitors, allowing just three hits while walking two Falcons and striking out five.
BGSU-UMASS – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Madison Wendel, the Falcons' starting pitcher, allowed just four hits in four innings of work, and only one of those four singles left the infield. Brooke Musch reached on a one-out single in the first inning, but Wendel got a pair of grounder to end the inning.
• BG's first baserunner came in the second, when Cameron Kaufman singled with one down. Ashley Chevalier followed with a line drive, but it was hit directly at Odyssey Torres for the second out, and pitcher Hannah Streicher then got an inning-ending strikeout.
• Hanna Massaro singled with one out in the third, but a fielder's choice and a grounder to third sent the teams to the fourth.
• Wendel faced just one batter over the minimum through three innings, but Musch and Torres began the fourth with back-to-back infield singles, putting runners at the corners. On a double-steal attempt, BG tagged Torres out after a rundown, but Musch scored on the play, giving the Minutewomen the lead.
• BG answered in the bottom of the fourth. Addie Martin was hit by a pitch with one out, and stole second. A strikeout produced the second out, but Chevalier's perfectly-placed hit landed in shallow center for a single, with Martin scoring from second to tie the game.
• Tiegan Walsh led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle – the first UMass hit to leave the infield – and Morgan Beckham replaced Wendel in the circle. Beckham issued a pair of walks in the inning, but also had a strikeout, and with the bases loaded, the sophomore induced Musch into an inning-ending ground ball to Hannah Hunt at second.
• Peyton Steffes and Taylor Behrendt drew back-to-back two-out walks in the BG fifth, but Streicher escaped the jam by getting an infield popup.
• In the sixth, the visitors took the lead. Torres led off with a single, and Lillie Scheivert followed with a single on a ball that landed just in front of a diving Massaro in shallow right. A fly ball to left produced the first out, and shortstop Martin ranged to her right to grab a ground ball off the bat of Walsh, throwing to Behrendt at third for a force play and the second out.
• But, Grace Colucci followed with a single to center that scored Scheivert with the go-ahead run. Beckham struck out Katharine Heslin to end the inning, but UMass had a 2-1 lead.
• And, Streicher made that lead stand up, retiring the side in order in both the sixth and seventh frames.
UP NEXT
