FINAL RESULTS (.pdf)
Parker Hewit finished a career-best third and led four Falcons in the top 20, as the Bowling Green State University took third place on Sunday (April 24) at the 2011 Boilermaker Invitational.
Fellow Falcon Drew Preston also produced a solid tournament. His Easter Sunday ended with a tournament-best round of 72 and a composite 222 (73-77-72). Preston's six-over-par performance earned a tie for 11th place, and it gives him a fifth top-20 finish in his last seven tournaments.
Wes Gates and Chris Melvin each also secured top-20 scores for Bowling Green. Each shot 228 during the weekend's 54 holes to tie for 20th overall. Gates shot a 76 on Sunday to complete his weekend after earlier rounds of 78 and 74. Melvin shot matching 74s in the first and third rounds.
Torey Brummett, playing as an individual, completed his weekend trek just three strokes out of the top 20. He carded a 78 on Sunday and finished the weekend with a tally of 231 (76-77-78).
Charlie Olson rounded out team play for Bowling Green. After struggling on Saturday, Olson responded with a very strong Easter round. His even-par 72 on Sunday was one of the best rounds of the day; only four of the 60 individuals scored better. Olson finished with a final total of 239.
As a team, the Falcons finished third overall, behind Purdue and Idaho. The team produced their best round of the event on Sunday, when they combined for a 289. Only Purdue's 284, also on Sunday, was better throughout the entire tournament.
More importantly, BGSU's composite 891 (296-306-289) bested the scores of Mid-American Conference opponents Northern Illinois and Ohio. This result should provide a confidence boost for the team headed into next weekend's MAC Championship.
A preview of the MAC Championship will be available at BGSUFalcons.com later this week.
