FIRST ROUND RESULTS (.pdf)
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team endured a two-hour rain delay during the first round of the Kentucky (UK) Bluegrass Invitational on Saturday (April 9), but they emerged in contention, tied for eighth place among 18 teams after the first round.
The Falcons currently stand third among four Mid-American Conference teams playing at the Big Blue Course at Kentucky's University Club. In the first round, the Orange and Brown shot a 15-over-par 299 on the par-71, 7,013-foot course. BGSU leads Akron by one stroke, while they trail Ohio by one and Toledo by eight.
In fact, the Falcons are within ten shots of everyone except tournament-leader Auburn. The Tigers, who came into the tournament ranked sixth in the most recent Sagarin ratings (the only team in the field in the top 100), shot a 287 in the first round and is 12 strokes ahead of Bowling Green.
Individually, sophomore Wes Gates leads the Falcons after posting a one-over-par 72 in the first round. Gates is part of an eight-way tie for ninth place. There are two players one shot ahead and three others tied for fourth with a first-round 70. Dominic Bozzelli of Auburn tops the field after shooting a 67.
Parker Hewit, a junior from Westfield, Ohio, is currently tied for 35th overall. However, in the tightly-packed field, Hewit rests only three shots behind Gates, thanks to his first-round 75.
Drew Preston and Chris Melvin are both in the top half of the field, as each shot a 76 in the first round. That number secured each a tie for 44th place.
Sophomore transfer Torey Brummett, who is competing in his first tournament since the John Piper Intercollegiate last September, finished the first round with a total of 82.
Saturday's first-round rain delay caused a suspension of second-round play due to darkness. Teams have completed approximately 11 holes of the second round; however, those scores will not be available until the conclusion of the round. Second round play will resume with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The final 18 holes will begin immediately after the end of the second round.
