Nassau, Bahamas native will join Albanian club, play in Europa League in 2011-12
Former Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Cameron Hepple has been sold to KF Tirana, and will play in the Europa League this season. Hepple, who has played with the Kitsap (Wash.) Pumas of the Premier Development League for the past two seasons, has joined the Albanian club upon completion of his national-team duties.
Hepple, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, is a member of his country's national team, and helped them to a pair of shutout wins in the first round of World Cup qualifying in the CONCACAF region. The Bahamian National Team defeated Turks and Caicos Islands, 6-0, on Sunday (July 9).
KF Tirana, by winning a league championship, earned the right to participate in the Europa League in the 2011-12 campaign. The team is based in Tirane, the capital city of Albania. KF Tirana hosts FC Spartak Trnava on Thursday (July 14) in Europa League play.
Hepple, who completed his BGSU career in the fall of 2009, reached a two-year agreement -- the first of its kind for the club -- with Kitsap in February of 2010. He has played for the past two springs/summers with the United Soccer League team based in Bremerton, Wash.
Last month, Hepple helped the team advance to the third round of the US Open Cup, before the Pumas lost a 2-1 decision to the Seattle Sounders of MLS. Additionally, Kitsap is closing in on the championship of the PDL's Northwest Division, with an 11-0-3 record to date.
Hepple started each of Kitsap's first 12 matches this season, including all three US Open Cup contests, before being called away for national-team duties. He scored the match-winning goal in the 86th minute against Victoria on May 8, and also scored a goal in the team's next match. Hepple also scored the opening goal in the team's 3-1 win over Real Colorado in the second round of the US Open Cup (June 22).
Hepple led the Falcons in scoring in his senior season of 2009, with 10 goals and 21 points. He scored nearly half of BG's goals on the year, including game-winning markers against both Marshall and Florida Atlantic.
Hepple amassed his point total in just 12 matches, missing all of six contests and parts of two others due to injury. He tied for second in the MAC in goals per game (0.83) and was third in the league in goals, assists, points and points per game (1.75).
In conference games only, Hepple had totals of four goals and eight points, despite playing in just three of the Falcons' six matches. Despite missing half of the conference contests, Hepple tied for second on the league in goals and was sixth in points. He led the entire MAC in goals per game (1.33) and points per game (2.67) in league games only.
Hepple had three multiple-goal games on the season, including a hat trick against Dayton and two-goal contests in MAC wins over Buffalo and FAU. His totals of 10 goals and 21 points are the highest by a Falcon in four years.
Hepple finished his Falcon career with 17 goals, nine assists and 43 points in the Brown and Orange.
In addition to his BGSU experience, Hepple played in the USL's Premier Development League for the Bradenton Academics in '09. In 14 matches he logged 890 minutes, registering two goals and two assists.
Hepple burst on the scene as a teenager, following trials with Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League, before going on to play domestically for Bears FC in the Bahamian New Providence Football League. He came to the Pumas following trials with Portsmouth.
Hepple left the Bahamas to play college soccer in 2006, earning All-MAC honors twice during his BGSU career.
Hepple, as alluded to earlier, is a full international for the Bahamas National Football Team. He played for the Bahamas U-17 and U-23 teams before making his senior debut in World Cup qualification match against Dominica as a 15-year-old.
