Women's Golf Announces 2011-12 Tournament Schedule
August 11, 2011 | Women's Golf
This afternoon (Aug. 11th), the Bowling Green State University women's golf team released an ambitious schedule of 12 tournaments for the 2011-12 season. This year's schedule takes the Falcons to eight different states and virtually every region of the United States.
Falcon head coach Stephanie Young, who is entering her sixth full season at the helm of the program, said, "I am excited to announce our schedule for the 2011-12 season. It offers strong competition on challenging golf courses, and it allows us to see teams from the conference and expand our experience regionally, as well."
The season opens on Saturday, Sept. 10th and Sunday, Sept. 11th, when the team travels to Normal, Ill. for the Redbird Invitational. Bowling Green has not opened the season at a tournament sponsored by Illinois State University since the 1998-99 season, when it competed in the season-opening Redbird Classic.
One week later, the Falcons trek to Waynesville, N.C. and the Great Smokies Intercollegiate for the third consecutive year. Last season, Bowling Green set team scoring records for 18 and 36 holes in Waynesville. The team shot an opening-round 294 and followed that with a second-round 315 for a record 36-hole mark of 609. Paula DiFrancesco and Bailey Arnold led current Falcons with scores of 153, while sophomore and team captain Amy Ruthenberg shot a 158.
Bowling Green returns to Ohio from Sept. 26-27 for the first of three in-state tournaments during the season. Their September stop in Ohio takes place in Hinckley, where they will compete in the Cleveland State Invitational.
The Falcons follow their brief interlude in Ohio with a western trip that takes them to Dayton, Nev. for the Wolf Pack Women's Classic, which is hosted by the University of Nevada.
Young said, "The Wolfpack Classic is a first annual event, and we are grateful to the University of Nevada for inviting us to participate in their tournament. The team will be exposed to an Arnold Palmer-designed course and a part of the country they haven't competed in yet."
On October 10th and 11th, BGSU travels to Fishers, Ind., the native home of Falcon junior Jen Blanchard. While in Fishers, the team will compete in the 2011 Mid-American Conference Preview at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club, which is the site of the 2012 MAC Championships.
Bowling Green concludes the fall portion of their schedule on October 17th and 18th at the Zippy Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the University of Akron, takes place in Fairlawn, Ohio.
Five months later, the Falcons resume their season by travelling to one of the premier golf destinations in the world. On March 25 and 26, BGSU will compete at Hilton Head Island, S.C. in Wofford College's Low Country Intercollegiate.
Young commented, "The Low Country Intercollegiate is hosted by Moss Creek Golf Club. Heidi Wright-Tennyson, who is the Director of Golf for Moss Creek, is an alum of BGSU and our women's golf program. It will be special to compete at a new venue and have the players make a connection with Heidi. She was an important player for the program, not to mention the career success she's had since her time at BGSU."
During the first fiew days of April, at a site/date to be determined, the Falcons will face Ohio University for the third consecutive year in the Spring Challenge Cup. The Cup is a two-day match-play event that consists of four-ball matches as well as head-to-head individual matches.
Following the Spring Challenge Cup, Bowling Green prepares for the MAC Championships by competing in three tournaments over a ten-day span.
First, the team competes in Richmond, Ky. at the Colonel Classic, hosted by Eastern Kentucky University. Last year in Richmond, the Falcons had one of the best tournaments of their season, shooting three straight rounds under 320 on their way to a composite 944.
The middle event in the Falcons' ten-day gauntlet occurs in Detroit, Mich. as BGSU participates in the Detroit Titans Invitational on April 9th and 10th.
The final tournament of the three is Bowling Green's only home tournament of the season. The team hosts the annual Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on April 14th and 15th at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green. The team re-named the event at the 2011 tournament to honor Black, an alumnus of the program.
The 2011-12 season concludes at the MAC Championships, which will take place from April 27th through 29th.
Young said, "We look forward to having the MAC events return to Hawthorns Golf and Country Club. It is an outstanding golf course that sets up well for us as a team. Of course, another highlight (of the schedule) will be hosting the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational next April. I look forward to having many alumni, family and friends attend the tournament and activities. It is always such a memorable weekend for our golf program."
The 2011-12 Falcons return five members of last year's team, including outstanding freshmen Bailey Arnold and Kelsey Benson and team captain Amy Ruthenberg. The team rounds out its roster with two promising recruits from Texas, Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson.
