Bearcats Top Falcons, 1-0, in Monday Night Futbol
August 15, 2011 | Men's Soccer
Cole DeNormandie's goal with just under 20 minutes gone held up as the winner, as the University of Cincinnati held on for a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Monday night (Aug. 15). The scrimmage was held at UC's Gettler Stadium.
"It is early in the season for both teams, so neither team was very sharp," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "But, we saw some good things out there tonight."
DeNormandie scored on a header with 19:50 elapsed in the exhibition match. UC's Shamar Shelton picked up the lone assist, playing a cross to DeNormandie from the left flank.
The teams played three 30-minute periods in the match, with 21 different BGSU players seeing action. For Nichols and his staff, the starting lineup featured three first-year Falcons and six players in their second season of action in the Brown and Orange.
UC held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shot attempts, but the Falcons had five shots on goal to the Bearcats' four. Nine different BGSU players had one shot apiece in the match.
BGSU had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks on the night, with four of those five CKs coming in the final 30-minute period.
Miguel Rosales played the first 60 minutes in goal, making a total of three saves against his former club. Rosales transferred to BGSU from UC prior to the 2010-11 academic year. Dylan Schoettley played the final period in net and did not face a shot on goal.
"We saw some positive things, and we also saw some things that we need to work on," said Nichols. "All in all, though, it was good for us to get a match under our belts and see where we stand at this time of the preseason. Now, we have nearly a week to continue to work and get better before our next match."
The Falcons have one more scrimmage before the games begin to count. BGSU returns to Northwest Ohio to prepare for a Sunday (Aug. 21) exhibition against Butler University. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field and admission is free.
