BGSU downs nationally-ranked Bulldogs, 2-1, at Cochrane Field
Senior Colin Armstrong scored a pair of second-half goals as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team rallied from a goal down for a 2-1 win over nationally-ranked Butler University Sunday afternoon (Aug. 21). The scrimmage was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 21 in the country in the NSCAA's preseason poll, had taken the lead with a goal late in the first half. After a BU corner kick, the Falcons were unable to clear the ball from their own end, and the visitors capitalized. But, the Brown and Orange would battle back after the break.
Armstrong scored his first goal of the day after a shot by senior tri-captain Tanner Fink. The BU goalkeeper had vacated his net to contest a shot by Fink, and Armstrong cleaned up in front of the net to tie the score.
Then, off of a BGSU corner kick, redshirt junior Zach Lemke made a dummy run, and the ball went to Armstrong, who scored what would prove to be the match winner.
The Bulldogs had a flurry at the end, but junior goalkeeper Dylan Schoettley and the BG back line kept the visitors from tying the score. Schoettley played the second half of the match after sophomore Michael Wiest had played the opening half in goal.
"I am pleased to get this result today," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "The guys played well, and I am happy for them. Obviously, we are far from where we need to be, but we are on the right track.
"Butler is a very good team -- they beat us 5-0 at their place last year -- so this is a very good win for us as the preseason winds down. We know that we have a long way to go, but we will take this result and come back to the practice field on Tuesday ready to go."
Nichols and the Falcons will begin the regular season on Friday (Aug. 26), hosting the University of Michigan in a 6:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field.
