Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team improved to 8-0 on the year and remained unbeaten in the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational by defeating SIU-Edwardsville 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 Saturday morning.
Coming off of an emotional win over Michigan State Friday night in the team's first match ever in Stroh Center, it would have been understandable for the Falcons to have a drop-off. However, Bowling Green trailed just once in the first set, at 1-0, and set the message early that there would be no letdown.
The Falcons got production across their front line, most notably by Paige Penrod, who ended with 19 kills and added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Emily Kauth added 14 kills and three blocks, while Danielle Tonyan had 11 kills and three blocks. Kari Galen added nine kills and five blocks, hitting .400. As well, Lauren Mizgalski had six kills and two blocks.
After falling behind 1-0 in that opening set, the Falcons used four kills and a block to score six consecutive points. Bowling Green maintained the lead until late when SIU-Edwardsville used an 8-3 run to get within one point at 21-20. An SIU-Edwardsville service error, though, opened the door and it was followed by Penrod and Mizgalski kills. Penrod added one more kill for the 25-21 win.
In the second set, Bowling Green scored seven in a row to go up 8-4 and again held onto a solid cushion until late. The Cougars scored three straight to get within one at 18-17 before another inopportune service error. Galen followed with a kill and SIU-Edwardsville never got closer than two points down the stretch.
Bowling Green looked as if it would sweep as the Falcons took a 19-13 lead in the third set but SIU-Edwardsville answered with eight straight points and closed out the stanza with back-to-back aces.
The Falcons regrouped in the fourth and used a 10-1 midway through to put the match away. Leading 12-11, Bowling Green scored nine of those 10 points off of kills, including the last five in succession. From there, the Falcons rolled to their eighth straight win to start the year.
For the match, Bowling Green hit .280 and held SIU-Edwardsville to .220. The Falcons also held a 57-51 edge in digs and an 8.0-7.0 lead in blocks.
SIU-Edwardsville fell to 5-5 with the loss and Bowling Green improved to 8-0. The Falcons will look to stay undefeated Saturday night against Canisius at 5:30 p.m.
