Goals by Armstrong, Silva not enough
Despite a lopsided advantage in numerous statistical categories, the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 loss to Belmont University on Friday afternoon (Sept. 16). The match, part of the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational, was held at BU's E.S. Park Field.

With the win, the host Bruins improve to 3-3-0 on the season. The Falcons drop to 4-2-0 on the year.
"This was a tough loss," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "I can't fault our effort today. We competed, we created enough chances to score and we had significant advantages in shots and corners. The opportunities were there; we just had several moments where we just weren't good enough, and we conceded goals in those moments.
"But, we will be back. We will learn from this; it is a good lesson, and we will get back at it and be ready to roll."
The Falcons had advantages of 20-8 in total shot attempts, 8-5 in shots on goal and 8-2 in corner kicks in Friday's match. But, Belmont scored two goals within the game's first 10 minutes. BGSU cut the Bruins' lead in half on two occasions, but the Brown and Orange never could get an equalizer.
Senior Colin Armstrong and redshirt sophomore Brandon Silva scored the Falcons' goals. Freshman Danny Baraldi picked up the lone assist on Armstrong's goal, which cut BG's deficit to 2-1 with nearly 11 minutes left in the first half. Belmont retook a two-goal lead as Alex Jenison scored at the 73:57 mark, but Silva converted a penalty kick just over four minutes later.
"Colin gave us a great spark off the bench," said Nichols. "Not only did he score a goal, but he also created a lot of offense and energy for us. And, Brandon did a great job in his first game back after suffering a concussion a few games ago. He was solid for us in the middle, and took care of his PK.
"We had a lot of other good opportunities; it just didn't happen for us. But, we also need to be sharper for a full 90 minutes, and we can't take any of those little breaks that we took today."
The Falcons remain in Nashville for a second match in the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational. BGSU will meet tournament host Lipscomb University in Sunday action (Sept. 18), with that match beginning at 3:30 p.m. locally (4:30 p.m. Eastern). While LU is the tournament host, the tourney is being held at Belmont's home field due to renovations at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
