Lewisburg, Pa. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team tied the best start in program history by winning its 10th consecutive match with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-23 win against Stony Brook in the first match of the Bucknell Invitational. At 10-0, the Falcons equaled the 1990 team's unbeaten streak to start the year.
In fact, the 10 straight wins ties for the fifth-longest win streak in program history. The Falcons still have seven wins to go to tie the program record with 17 consecutive wins, set in 2006.
Stony Brook never got its offense going, finishing with just an .033 attack percentage and never having more than eight kills in any set. Bowling Green hit .200 for the match and had at least 12 kills in every set, getting a balanced effort across the front line. Danielle Tonyan led the way with 11 kills but Paige Penrod added nine and Emily Kauth had seven.
Sophomore setter Laura Avila helped set the tone for the Falcons early, posting eight assists, four digs and two aces in the first set. She finished with 23 assists, seven digs, and those two aces for a team-high.
Bowling Green scored the first nine points of the match and never looked back. In fact, the Falcons never trailed until the third set when head coach Denise Van De Walle was using her entire bench. Van De Walle used 13 players in the match and all of them recorded at least one kill or one dig.
The only set that had any intrigue was the third as Stony Brook built an early 12-7 lead. However, the Falcons scored four straight and eventually tied the score at 17-17 on a Penrod kill. With the set still tied at 23-23, Stony Brook had back-to-back attack errors as the Falcons clinched the win.
Ashley Dunn led the Falcons' defensive effort with 13 digs as Bowling Green had 40 for the match, four more than Stony Brook. Erica Fullenkamp added nine digs and had 13 assists.
Stony Brook falls to 3-7 with the loss. Bowling Green will go for sole possession of the best start in program history Saturday as the Falcons face Coppin State at 3 p.m. and host Bucknell at 5 p.m.
