Dayton, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a season-high in aces and digs as the Falcons rolled past Wright State 28-26, 25-12, 25-23 to remain unbeaten in non-conference play on the year.
No Bowling Green player had more than eight kills but the Falcons made up for it by posting nine aces and 68 digs. Five different players had at least one ace with Paige Penrod posting three and Emily Kauth and Laura Avila finishing with two each. Four different players had at least 10 digs and Ashley Dunn paced the team with 19. Penrod had 14 digs, Erica Fullenkamp had a career-high 12 digs, and Avila totaled 10.
“We made up for our hitting errors with outstanding serving and defense tonight,” Head coach Denise Van De Walle said. “Wright State is a much better team than their record indicates. They pushed us to the limit and the longer they played, the better they got.”
The first set featured 13 ties and six lead changes as Bowling Green fought off two set points to win the opener. Avila's strong serving early helped stake the Falcons to a 4-0 lead but Wright State battled back and led 24-22. When Bowling Green needed the power, the Falcons got it with consecutive kills from Kari Galen, Danielle Tonyan, and Fullenkamp for a 25-24 lead. After Wright State tied the score back up, Fullenkamp and Galen paired up for on a block to take a 26-25 lead. The Raiders answered with a block to tie the score again but Kauth and Lauren Mizgalski finished off the frame with back-to-back kills.
Wright State appeared to have its spirit broken as Bowling Green dominated the second set on the way to a 25-12 win, but the Raiders bounced back to make it interesting in the third.
Wright State led by as many as two points at 15-13 but Bowling Green came back to lead 24-21. The Raiders fought off two of the match points but Penrod put the match away with a thunderous kill.
Along with the strong effort serving and digging, the Falcons also had 12.0 team blocks, getting a match-high seven from Galen. Tonyan added five and Kauth and Penrod had four each. Kauth led the way with eight kills as four players had at least six.
“Our middles, Kari Galen and Emily Kauth, were our bread and butter tonight,” Van De Walle said. “And Laura Avila found a way to get the ball to the middle effectively and she balanced that out with great serving to go with 10 digs as well.”
Wright State falls to 2-13 on the year. Bowling Green, now 14-1, will host Akron Friday at 7 p.m. in a Mid-American Conference match before hosting Buffalo Saturday at 3 p.m.
