DAY ONE RESULTS (.pdf)
VERONA, N.Y. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team teed off the 2011-12 season in solid fashion and will enter the final day of competition in contention for the team and individual tournament championships at the 2011 Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
During the first two rounds of the three-round, 54-hole tournament, the Falcons carded a composite 571. The team scored a 283 in the first round, then followed that with a total of 288 in the second round. BGSU's second-round total trailed only Baylor in the field of 14 teams.
The Orange and Brown enter the final round on Monday (Sept. 5) trailing Missouri by four strokes and Purdue by five. Tournament-leader Baylor (563) is eight strokes ahead of BGSU. The team leads fifth-place Texas Christian by one stroke.
Individually, Bowling Green's top performer on Sunday was senior Drew Preston. Preston used round scores of 70 and 69 to end the day at five-under-par (139). He is in a three-way tie for fourth place but trails tournament co-leaders Kyle Jones (Baylor) and Julien Brun (Texas Christian) by only two strokes. If Preston wins the tournament, it would be his third career victory. That total would tie the BGSU record.
Charlie Olson began his second year with Bowling Green by shooting two par-or-better rounds. He finished the first two rounds at one-under-par after shooting 71 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon. Olson will begin play on Monday tied for 14th place.
Parker Hewit and Wes Gates are also in the top 25 after Sunday's play. Hewit completed rounds of 70 and 74 to finish with a total of 144 and a tie for 20th place. Gates is tied for 23rd after carding 145 (72-73) after two rounds.
Torey Brummett rounded out Bowling Green's team of five golfers and shot 157 for the day. After a slow start, he improved his score by five strokes from the first to the second round. Falcon freshman Joe Cooper shot rounds of 72 and 82 in his debut. Cooper is playing this weekend as an individual.
Former Falcon John Powers also made his debut -- a coaching debut -- on Sunday at Turning Stone. Powers is the new head coach at St. Bonaventure, and after the first day, the Bonnies are in 13th place (612).
The final round begins on Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Bowling Green golfers will play with Texas Christian and the four individuals. Preston's group begins on the fourth hole. Olson and Hewit's groups begin on the fifth; Hewit's group includes Joe Cooper. Wes Gates' and Torey Brummett will start play on the sixth and seventh hole, respectively.
