VERONA, N.Y. -- Drew Preston added to his career top-tens list and Charlie Olson had his best finish since last October as the Bowling Green State University men's golf team finished fifth in Verona, N.Y. at the 2011 Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Missouri.
Preston shot a final-round 75 during Monday's play on Verona, N.Y.'s Kaluhyat course. His final tally, after adding his 139 (70-69) from Sunday, was 214. That score earned Preston a tie for seventh place with Adam Schenk from Purdue and Jace Long from Missouri. Those three were one stroke behind a pair that tied for fifth.
Preston has now finished in the top ten of an event eight times during his career as a Falcon. He also improved his play from the 2010 Turning Stone by 19 strokes.
Olson fired a 76 on Monday (Sept. 5) and ended play with a 54-hole total of 219, which tied for 15th. Olson's score and place were an improvement over his play at last year's Turning Stone. They were also his best performances since winning the APSU Intercollegiate last October.
Parker Hewit ended play just outside of the top 20. His final round tally of 78 gave him a total of 222 for the weekend, two strokes behind a group tied for 18th. Meanwhile, Wes Gates and Torey Brummett each shot rounds of 81 on Monday and carded weekend totals of 226 and 238, respectively.
Falcon freshman Joe Cooper, playing as an individual, bounced back after a rough second round to record a 75 on Monday. He carded 229 in Verona and placed second among the four playing as individuals.
As a team, the Falcons' score dropped to 310 on Monday after two rounds in the 280s on Sunday. However, the team lost only one place in the standings and finished fifth out of 14 teams after scoring 881 during the event. Their final total beat their 2010 score (903) by 22 strokes.
Unlike Sunday, weather impacted play during Monday's final round. A weather front brought chilly temperatures and steady rain to the Verona, N.Y. area for Labor Day, and the scores showed how rough play was. Twelve of the 14 teams had their worst round of the tournament on Monday, while only two teams shot better than 299.
Individually, there were only five under-par rounds (out of 74) on Monday. Sunday's play featured 37 under-par rounds during the two rounds of play.
The Falcons now return home for the week before they travel to Sugar Grove, Ill. for the Northern Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10th and 11th. The tournament will be played at the site of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships.
