
Falcons Roll Past EMU To MAC Tourney Semifinals

Geneva, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team swept Eastern Michigan 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 Friday night to advance to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Semifinals. The Falcons were in control throughout to move on to the semifinals for the first time since 2008.
The Falcons had 20 more kills than Eastern Michigan and posted eight aces, seven more than EMU. The Falcons also had a 66-50 edge in digs and hit .246, almost double the Eagles' .124 attack percentage.
Bowling Green's All-MAC First Team trio did not disappoint as Danielle Tonyan finished with 13 kills while Paige Penrod and Lindsey Butterfield had 12 each. Penrod added a match-high 19 digs for her 18th double-double of the season, while Tonyan had three aces, eight digs and four blocks. Butterfield added seven digs and three blocks.
Butterfield set the tone early with four kills and a block as the Falcons built an 8-5 first-set lead. Bowling Green still led 16-13 before a 5-1 run, capped by a Leah Shaw kill, put the opening set away. Penrod closed the frame with a service ace.
Eastern Michigan hung closer in the second set and the Eagles actually led 17-14. But Bowling Green finished on an 11-3 run behind eight kills from Tonyan, Penrod and Butterfield.
In the third set, EMU led 7-6 but Bowling Green scored five straight and never trailed again. The Falcons continued to extend the lead and cruised to the 25-18 victory.
Along with the strong performances by Tonyan, Penrod and Butterfield, Bowling Green head coach Danijela Tomic saw a number of others put up big outings as well. Shaw had seven kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces. Kaitlyn Skinner had three kills and tied for the team high with four blocks. Laura Avila finished with a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs, while Ashley Dunn dug 16 balls and had seven assists.
Eastern Michigan's season comes to a close at 18-15 overall. Bowling Green improves to 19-10, equaling its overall win total from a year ago, and the Falcons, seeded No. 2, will play No. 3 seed Western Michigan Saturday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. The winner will play in the MAC Tournament Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. against either No. 1 seed Ohio or No. 4 seed Northern Illinois.
