Falcons Travel To Florida For MAC Match-Play Tournament
February 10, 2012 | Men's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team begins their spring schedule on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 13-14) by facing seven Mid-American Conference rivals in a unique three-round, twln-bracket match play tournament. The event will take place in Dade City, Fla.
The tournament will be played at the par-72 Lake Jovita South Course in Dade City. The course covers 7,153 yards.
Each of the eight teams will square off against one other in each round, which results in four team matches per round. Teams will be comprised of six players, and those six players will be paired with the players from the opposing team for six individual matches. Teams earn one point if a player wins a match and a half-point for a draw. The group of six with the most points at the end of the round wins the team match.
After the first round, the four winning teams advance to the winners' bracket for two semi-final matches. The winners of the semi-finals in the second round will compete against one another in the third round for the tournament championship. The losers of the semi-final matches will compete in the third round for third- and fourth-place honors.
The losing teams in the first round compete in the twin bracket. The winners of the two matches in the second round will fight for fifth- or sixth-place in the final round, while the teams that lose in the second round will vie for seventh- or eighth-place in the final standings.
The Falcons have drawn Eastern Michigan as their first round opponent. The Eagles played in four fall tournaments, and their best finish was seventh (twice). Bowling Green competed five times and posted their best result at home as they won the annual John Piper Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Falcons' second round opponent will be either Akron or Miami.
"We are excited to get started this weekend. This will be our first-ever match play tournament, and we start on Monday morning against a talented Eastern Michigan team," head coach Garry Winger said. "We have been fortunate to be able to play a few holes outside this month with the weather we've had, and other coaches have said their teams have also been able to play outside, so it should be a great, competitive event."
The individual pairings for the BGSU-EMU match are:
Charlie Olson (BGSU) vs. Brian Churchill-Smith (EMU)
Parker Hewit (BGSU) vs. Casey Olsen (EMU)
Drew Preston (BGSU) vs. Derek East (EMU)
Wes Gates (BGSU) vs. Alex Jones (EMU)
Chris Melvin (BGSU) vs. Brian Burt (EMU)
Joe Cooper (BGSU) vs. Zach MacDougall (EMU)
Teams will play the first and second rounds on Monday; the final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
Bowling Green will prepare for the event with a scrimmage against Ohio on Saturday (Feb. 11). The scrimmage occurs on the same course as the tournament.
