AKRON, Ohio -- More school and career records fell on Saturday (Feb. 25) at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, but the Bowling Green State University swimming team could not escape eighth place as the meet concluded at the Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
Alexis Kain concluded her best MAC Championship effort as a Falcon by earning a second silver medal on Saturday. She earned the honor by swimming the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best 2:14.06.
Kain's won her first silver on Friday night, as she set a BGSU record time in the 100-yard breaststroke. She was awarded a spot on the 2012 All-MAC Second Team as a result of her efforts.
Senior Amanda Rom concluded her Falcon career in the 200 breaststroke by posting a season-best time of 2:18.71 in the preliminary heats and by placing 14th in the night session.
Alexa Harris gave Bowling Green its most riveting performances of the day. She swam to a BGSU-record 1:58.93 and fifth place in the preliminary heats for the 200-yard backstroke. In the championship heat, she beat both marks. She won fourth place by setting a new BGSU standard of 1:58.73.
In the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries, Emily Bennet came within a fraction of a second of the BGSU record by finishing in a season-best 0:50.68. The school record is 0:50.36. Bennet's time earned a spot in the championship final, where she placed eighth in 0:51.01.
Sarah Reinink, another of BGSU's six outgoing seniors, also set a career-best time in the 100 freestyle. She earned a spot as the third-fastest in school history with a mark of 0:51.05, then finished 15th overall in the championship heats (0:51.34).
Reinink's final event as a Falcon occurred with Bennet, Jen Beatty and Brittany Szekely in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group finished the swim in 3:25.66 and fell just shy of the school record in the event.
Beatty was the third of four Falcons to set personal records in the 100 freestyle (0:52.27). Allie Reynolds (0:53.52) was the fourth. Senior Andrea Brown set a season-best time in the event, her last with BGSU.
Two other seniors produced outstanding efforts in their final career events. Vicky Yu, BGSU's most recent MAC gold medalist, won the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday night by posting a mark of 2:02.21. Meanwhile, Megan Bomicino set a personal-record by swimming the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:00.72. She swam the first 1000 yards in 10:13.73, which also represents a personal record.
As a team, the Falcons set 35 different personal career records, 11 season-best times and four school records during the 2012 MAC Championships.
The team concluded the meet with 268 points, which resulted in an eighth place finish. The Falcons were 21 points behind Akron for seventh place.
The University of Toledo won the 2012 MAC championship with 635 points, defeating Ohio University by 23.
