BOXSCORE
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost a close game to Notre Dame Friday night, falling to the Fighting Irish 2-1. Freshman Ted Pletsch scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior Andrew Hammond stopped 25-of-27 shots in the loss.
The Irish opened the scoring in the contest, tallying an even-strength goal at the 14:55 mark of the first period. Notre Dame sophomore T.J. Tynan collected the puck after it took an Irish bounce in the slot, and moved his way around Hammond before burying his twelfth goal of the season. Tynan's goal marked his conference-leading thirty seventh point of the season, and gave Notre Dame the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Both teams were held off the score sheet for the majority of the second stanza, as Hammond and Notre Dame goaltender Mike Johnson stood tall.
The Falcons finally broke through Johnson with just under two minutes remaining in the second period, as freshman Ted Pletsch buried his fourth goal of the season on a wrap around attempt from behind the cage. The goal marked Pletsch's fifth point of the season, and tied the contest 1-1.
Notre Dame responded with a tip-in goal from junior Nick Larson at the 5:45 mark of the third period, giving the Irish the 2-1 lead.
The Falcons were unable to beat Johnson for the remainder of the game, giving Notre Dame the 2-1 win.
Pletsch's tally breaks a personal four-game goal drought, dating back to the Falcons shootout win against Ohio State (Jan. 7) at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Tynan's goal gives him four points in three games against the Falcons this season, including three assists in two games in Bowling Green.
The 2-1 Bowling green loss extends Notre Dame's winning streak against the Falcons to six games. The last time Bowling Green beat the Irish was Nov, 5 of last year, when the Falcons defeated Notre Dame 3-2 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The loss puts the Falcons' overall record at 8-16-5 on the year, with a record of 3-14-4-3 in conference play. The win improves Notre Dame's to 16-10-3, with a record of 11-7-3 in CCHA action.
Bowling Green hits the ice Saturday night for an encore game against Notre Dame in South Bend. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
