Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced the addition of Greg Hennelly to his staff. Hennelly, a former Falcon men's soccer student-athlete, has joined the program as a volunteer assistant coach.
“Greg is energetic and enthusiastic about coaching, and is well respected in the local soccer community,” said Nichols. “He is going to be a fantastic addition to our staff.”
A native of Akron, Ohio, Hennelly has served as the director of youth development at the Toledo Football Academy since 2008. He has coached multiple teams with players ranging from 5-18 years old, and has managed the day-to-day operation of a program which includes over 200 players/family members.
“I want to thank Coach Nichols for allowing me the opportunity to join his staff,” said Hennelly. “I know the program is in great hands with Coach Nichols' positive attitude and extremely high standards for his players.
“I am very excited to return to the BGSU community and to become a contributing member of the Falcons' continued growth and success.”
In addition to his work with TFA, Hennelly has been a part of the US Soccer Region II staff for the past two years, evaluating players from 12 different stats for consideration in the national pool. He also has been a member of the Ohio North Olympic Development Program (ODP), serving as head coach of the State Team.
Hennelly was named the Ohio Youth Soccer Association North (OYSAN) Coach of the Year in 2011. He has his United States Soccer Federation 'B' License, and also has a USSF National Youth License.
A graduate of Revere High School, Hennelly played two seasons (2004-05) at BGSU. He saw action in 36 matches for the Falcons, starting 21. A midfielder, he had five points on a pair of goals and an assist in his inaugural season, scoring goals against Ohio State and Western Michigan.
In the 2005 campaign, Hennelly had four points, on goals against Evansville and St. Mary's (Calif.). The latter goal was the final marker in a 3-1 BGSU win at Cochrane Field.
Hennelly earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from BGSU in 2009. He currently resides in Toledo.
