March 23, 2012 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Nick Richey as the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine. He replaces Doug Boersma, who was named the Director of Sports Medicine at Purdue. Richey will begin at BGSU on April 2.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Bowling Green family,” Richey said. “BG provides a unique opportunity for both my family and myself. I am excited to get going and look forward to working with all of the wonderful people in and around the community.”
Richey most recently served as the head football athletic trainer at the University of Illinois, where he served in that role since May of 2009. He was hired in June of 2007 as an assistant athletic trainer at Illinois and was promoted to co-head athletic trainer for football in June of 2008.
“We are very excited to welcome Nick to the BG family,” Associate Athletics Director Lesley Irvine said. Irvine oversees the sports medicine department. “He brings extensive experience in the sports medicine and sports performance fields. He was a standout candidate from the beginning and is a great fit for our department.”
Prior to his time at Illinois, Richey served as an athletic trainer for the men's soccer and women's lacrosse teams at Notre Dame from January of 2005 until being hired by the Fighting Illini. He received his bachelor's degree in athletic training from Purdue in May of 2003 and his masters degree in education, health and physical education from Virginia Tech in January of 2005, where he was a graduate assistant for the football and softball programs.
