Calhoun Named Second Team All-MAC; Thomas Third Team
March 07, 2012 | Men's Basketball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University junior forward A'uston Calhoun was named Second Team All-MAC and senior forward Scott Thomas was named Third Team All-MAC, as voted on by the league's 12 men's basketball coaches.
Calhoun was named All-MAC honorable mention a year ago and Thomas was an honorable mention performer each of the past two years before finally breaking onto the third team list.
Calhoun led Bowling Green with 13.5 points per game, shooting 48.1 percent from the floor. He was second on the team in rebounding with 5.8 per game and got to the free-throw line a team-high 108 times, making 71.3 percent of those attempts. In league games only, Calhoun ranked fifth in the MAC at 15.1 points per game, eighth in field-goal percentage at 50.3 percent, and 12th in rebounding at 5.4 per contest.
“A'uston is very talented offensive player who was our low-post scoring threat,” head coach Louis Orr said. “He's a player with enormous talent and his growth over the past two years speaks to that. He demanded double-teams and that opened things up for other guys. We need him to step up even more next year and be one of the premier players in this league.”
Thomas ranked second on the team with 12.3 points per game, but led the Falcons in rebounding (6.5 per game) and steals, pacing the MAC with 73. In fact, those 73 steals are tied for the second-most in a single-season in BGSU history. He was second on the team in assists, third in blocked shots, and made a team-best 58 three-pointers while shooting 37.9 percent from long range.
“Scott was one of the most versatile players in the MAC as well as one of the best all-around in the history of our school,” Orr said. “He showed strong leadership this year and was a hard worker. Because of everything he did for us, he was a guy who we couldn't keep off the floor and was second in the MAC in minutes. Scott had a great career at Bowling Green.”
Buffalo's Mitchell Watt and Javon McCrea joined Kent State's Justin Greene, Miami's Julian Mavunga, and Ohio's D.J. Cooper on the All-MAC First Team. Along with Calhoun, Akron's Zeke Marshall and Alex Abreu, Ball State's Jarrod Jones, and Toledo's Rian Pearson were selected to the second team. Akron's Nikola Cvetinovic, Central Michigan's Trey Zeigler, Eastern Michigan's Darrell Lampley, and Kent State's Michael Porrini joined Thomas on the third team.
Bowling Green completed the season at 16-15 overall and 9-7 in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons improved by two wins over the 2010-11 season and one win in MAC play, earning the sixth seed for the MAC Tournament. The team was upset in the first round of the conference tournament.
