BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team swept Eastern Michigan Friday afternoon, defeating the Eagles 6-1 in game one, before winning the second contest 7-1.
Freshman Shelby Fink
was 1-for-2 in the contest, including a two-run single. Junior Andrea Arney
(1-for-3) and sophomore Erika Stratton
(2-for-3) both recorded doubles, while junior Hannah Fulk
(1-for-4)recorded a home run in her only hit of the game. Freshman Jamie Kertes
(11-8) picked up the complete game victory, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just four hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Falcons once again came out on fire in the bottom of the first, recording four runs on four hits in the frame. Hulk led off the inning with her sixth home run of the season, giving Bowling Green the early 1-0 lead. A single and an error put two on for Arney, who doubled in a run and moved a runner over to third. After an Eastern Michigan pitching change, Fink singled up the middle and brought home the final two runs of the inning.
Bowling Green added another run in the bottom of the fourth, crossing the plate once on one hit in the frame. Stratton led off the inning with a double to right field, before being pulled in favor of sophomore Courtney Cox
as a pinch runner. Cox moved to third in the next at bat on a groundout, before an Eastern Michigan fielding error allowed Cox to score.
Both teams scored one more run in the contest, giving Bowling Green the 6-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
The Falcons carried their momentum from game one, dropping the Eagles by a score of 7-1 in the second game of the doubleheader. Fulk led the Falcons offensively, going 1-for-4 with a two-run homerun. Fink went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Chloe Giordano
recorded her first career two RBI game. Freshman Paris Imholz
(11-7) picked up the win, allowing just one earned run and five hits in 4.1 innings. Kertes picked up her fifth save of the season, allowing just one hit in the final 2.2 innings of play.
The Eagles drew first blood in the second contest, scoring their only run in the top of the first inning. Bowling Green responded in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits in the frame. Sophomore Katie Yoho
singled up the middle with one out, before advancing to second on another EMU fielding error. Stratton then came to the plate and doubled down the left field line, bringing in the first Falcon run. Giordano capped off the inning in the next at bat with a two-run single, giving Bowling Green the 3-1 lead.
The Falcons scored four more runs in the contest, highlighted by Fulk's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fulk's seventh home run of the season gave Bowling Green the 7-1 lead, securing the victory for the Falcons.
Bowling Green (24-15, 8-2 MAC) is back in action tomorrow, facing off against conference rival Central Michigan. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
