COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team concluded the 2012 Kepler Intercollegiate on Sunday (April 15) with a composite 310 and maintained the eighth-place standing that they carried into the final round of competition at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
The team was never in danger of dropping further down the leaderboard and actually went back-and-forth with the University of Toledo for seventh place throughout the final round. Ultimately, BGSU finished with a 54-hole total of 924 (305-309-310), two shots behind the Rockets' 922.
The Falcons ended the tournament third among the six Mid-American Conference teams in the 15-team field. Ball State shot 934 and finished tenth overall. BGSU also finished ahead of Ohio (935) and Eastern Michigan (939).
Kent State, ranked in the top 20 nationally, won the event with a three-day total of 898. The Golden Flashes fell as low as last place during the first round but shot 295 in both of the final two rounds. They are champions of the tournament for the second consecutive year.
Wes Gates shot a 74 on Sunday for his best round of the tournament. He tied for 13th with a 227 after scoring rounds of 78 and 75 on Saturday.
Gates was joined in the top 20 by Parker Hewit. Hewit earned his fourth such finish in nine events this season after carding a 78 on Sunday and a 228 (71-79-78) for the tournament. He ended Sunday's play tied for 19th place.
Chris Melvin also completed the event in the top half of the field. He tied for 35th place by shooting 232 (76-77-79).
Charlie Olson and Drew Preston also competed for the Falcons. Olson posted rounds of 81, 78 and 79 for a 54-hole total of 238, while Preston shot 249 on rounds of 80, 88 and 81.
BGSU now turns its attention to its final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships. The team plays next Saturday and Sunday (April 21 and 22) in West Lafayette, Ind. at the Boilermaker Invitational. The Falcons' last appearance in that tournament was last April, and Bowling Green placed third. More details will be available later this week.
