WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team concluded their 2011-12 regular season on Sunday (April 22) with a final-round 312 and a ninth-place finish at the 2012 Boilermaker Invitational. The 54-hole tournament was held at the Kampen course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Falcons shot a composite 909 (298-299-312) and found themselves squarely in the middle of an 18-team field packed with highly ranked teams. In fact, seven of the 18 teams were ranked in the top 50 of the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
Overall, BGSU entered the event ranked 12th among the 18 teams and finished ahead of all six teams ranked lower. They upset three teams ranked ahead of them; this included two Mid-American Conference teams and #34 Texas Christian, who finished 15 shots behind Bowling Green.
Among the seven-school MAC contingent, the Orange and Brown finished third. They were just seven shots behind Northern Illinois but defeated Akron by eight and Eastern Michigan by 11. Toledo ended the event 28 shots behind the Falcons, while Miami trailed by 32. Kent State was the top-ranked team in the tournament (#21) and ended up third overall, highest among all seven MAC squads.
Wes Gates completed the tournament with birdies on his final two holes, as he earned a tie for 15th place. Gates' total of 222 (69-77-76) is his second-best 54-hole total of the season, and he now owns two consecutive top-20 results.
Charlie Olson carded a 77 on Sunday for a two-day total of 225 (76-72-77). The score represents his best effort of the spring schedule. Olson finished just two shots outside of the top 20 and placed in a tie for 23rd overall.
Drew Preston and Parker Hewit each concluded their final regular season tournaments on Sunday. Preston posted a 78 on Sunday to finish at 232 (79-75-78), while Hewit scored rounds of 79, 75 and 81 for a 54-hole total of 235.
Chris Melvin shot a final-round 84 to end the tournament at 241. Playing as an individual, freshman Joe Cooper totaled 243 for the tournament after scoring an 85 on Sunday.
BGSU now has 12 days to prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships, which begin in Sugar Grove, Ill. on Friday, May 4th. More information about the championship event will be available next week.
