TOLEDO, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University softball team completed the sweep of Toledo Sunday afternoon, defeating the Rockets by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Katie Yoho was 1-for-3 on the day, including a double and a run scored. Freshman Paris Imholz picked up the complete game win, allowing just three hits and one earned run to go along with three strikeouts.
The Falcons got on the board first, scoring a single run on two hits in the top of the third inning. Freshman Chloe Giordano started the inning off with a single, eventually moving to third base on two sacrifice hits. Junior Paige Berger then belted an infield single, putting runners at first and third. Bowling Green then committed a double steal, allowing Giordano to take home for the first Falcon run.
Toledo answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the contest on two hits in the frame.
The Falcons responded in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on two hits to take the 3-1 lead. Junior Andrea Arney reached on a Toledo fielding error, before Yoho belted a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. A Bowling Green walk loaded the bases, before a wild pitch allowed the runners to move over, bringing home Arney for the second Falcon run. Senior Melissa West then came to the plate, and singled home the third Falcon run of the contest, putting the score at 3-1 in favor of Bowling Green.
Imholz was perfect for the remainder of the contest, holding the Rockets hitless in the final three innings to secure the win.
“We stayed after them (Toledo) the whole game,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “It was a cold day, there wasn't going to be a lot of offense. Our team didn't stop and they kept attacking. They (Toledo) scored their one run, the very next inning we came out and we finished it. That is an important piece of what we are doing right now, responding.”
Bowling Green is currently riding a season high four-game winning streak, dating back to the Falcons sweep of Eastern Kentucky on April 18.
Bowling Green (29-16, 11-3 MAC) is right back at it Monday, in a doubleheader against Oakland University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
