STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Bowling Green State University used a true team effort to end the first round of the 2012 Rutherford Intercollegiate in third place after shooting a composite 301 on Saturday (April 7).
The 54-hole tournament was scheduled to have two rounds completed on Saturday, but a delayed start of the first round meant that the second round could not be completed. Teams will resume second round play on Sunday (April 8) at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The final round of the event will begin immediately after the conclusion of the second round.
Despite the late start, the Falcons played well across the board. Wes Gates led the BGSU effort with a four-over-par 75. He is in a four-way tie for eighth place, just one shot behind a pair tied for sixth and two behind a group of four tied for second.
Kevin Yerks of George Mason (71) enjoyed a two-shot lead after the first round.
Three teammates are within one shot of Gates, amid a ten-way tie for 12th place at 76 (+5). Those three are Parker Hewit, Drew Preston and Chris Melvin.
Charlie Olson, rounding out the team effort in the first round, is also in the top-half of the 78-deep field. His first-round 78 is tied for 35th.
Falcon freshman Joe Cooper is playing as an individual and carded a 77 in the first round. He is in a 13-way tie for 22nd place, in what has proven to be a very tightly-packed field.
BGSU's team score (303) is two shots off of the lead (301), which is held by George Mason. Indiana University of Pennsylvania is second after shooting 302 in the first round.
The Falcons are one shot ahead of three teams tied for fourth place at 304 -- William and Mary, Connecticut and tournament host Penn State.
Altogether, ten teams are within ten shots of the lead, including fellow Mid-American Conference foe Miami (310). The other MAC team in the event, Eastern Michigan, posted a 313 and is 11th after the first round.
