Gates Captures Horton Smith Championship

Wes Gates, a member of the Bowling Green State University men's golf team, captured the 2012 Horton Smith Championship this past weekend with a final score of 280. The 72 hole event was held at the Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Mich.
Gates' 280 was two shots better than Mathew Thompson (282) in an event that saw a total of 41 competitors.
The senior-to-be trailed by five shots with 36 holes to play and was in an eight-way tie for 11th at the midway point after carding a 145 (72-73). Gates fired a 67 in round three, the lowest round of the day, to climb into a tie for first heading into the final round.
While playing in the last pairing, the Novi, Mich. native posted a 68 in the final round for the tournament victory. His 68 was the fourth lowest round in the final 18 holes.
