Bowling Green State University Athletics

Falcon Club Spotlight: Rebecca Ferguson
May 30, 2012 | Falcon Club
Beginning in January of 2012, the BGSU Department of Athletics will highlight a Falcon Club member each month. For May, Rebecca Ferguson has been selected. Rebecca is the Chief Human Resources Officer at BGSU and is a long-time Bowling Green resident.
Name: Rebecca C. Ferguson
Family: Spouse Al Baldwin (BGSU '69), sons: Benjamin (BGSU '09), Nicholas (BGSU '11)
Occupation: Chief Human Resources Officer
Hometown: I grew up in Jekyll Island, Georgia and Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Current Residence: I have lived in Bowling Green for over 30 years.
Childhood Ambition: To learn how to ride horses and own a ranch. I learned how to ride but have learned I don't want to own a ranch.
Fondest Memory of BGSU Athletics: March 2004; Lindsay Austin's two buzzer-beater shots in back-to-back MAC Women's Basketball Tournament games. In my opinion these two shots propelled us to the run to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2006-07 season.
Favorite Music: Antonio Vivaldi or Heather Small
Proudest Moment: Birth of Ben and Nic
Biggest Challenge: Stopping Smoking – took me four tries and I am now smoke-free for over three years. There are still moments when the idea of having a smoke pops into my mind.
The Perfect Day: Warm, pleasant weather and going to an Art Museum/Institute with both of my sons and then out to lunch at a great eatery. Of course this would have to occur in New York, Toronto or Chicago.
First Job: Most women my age started out babysitting. My first job with a schedule and the requirement to be paid for which I paid taxes would be a Drive In Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa -- the Dream Drive In. I worked inside coordinating orders and running the cash register. My mom would not let me work as a car hop.
Favorite Movie: Frank Capras with Jimmy Stewart, “It's a Wonderful Life”
Inspiration: A book – “The Art of Possibility, Transforming Professional and Personal Life” by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander
Biggest Idol: My Mom.
Favorite BGSU Athlete ever: Lindsay Austin; She was fun to watch and opened doors of possibility for those that came after her.
Dream Job: I am in it. I know that sounds sappy – but to me it is about attitude. If you need a new one buy it on the way to work. Your job is what YOU make of it. Don't like it then choose to change. Either in the job you have or another one. Only you can make it different by the lens through which you view.
If you could be friends with anyone in the world, it would be: Author, Iris Johansen.
If you could pick one place to call home, it would be: Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Favorite thing about BGSU: Our people. In my opinion you have to work someplace else to truly understand how special this place is – and it is our people and how we treat our students. Most people get it here, it is about the student not yourself.
Three items you can't live without: Besides my family – 1) Books – I have to be able to read 2) Books 3) or heat and air conditioning, don't like the extreme cold or heat. I can live without a lot of “items”.
Dream Vacation: On a beach with a good book; no, with a lot of good books.
Biggest Life Aspiration: To have lived, been happy and made others lives easier and, if possible, more fulfilling.
Favorite Place in Bowling Green: My back yard on a cool summer day before the bugs come out.
Favorite Professional Team: The Pittsburgh Steelers.
Favorite Book: Too many to pick one.
Recent Impulse Buy: a $10 coffee cup that is orange, green and white. It is wonderful to sit in my back yard with a good book and this cup full of good coffee.
Favorite Food: Almost any potato chip.
Something others may not know about me: I was the President of my sorority at the University of Iowa.
Supporting the Falcon Club is important to me because: Spend any time with any of our student-athletes and you know the answer to this question – they are outstanding individuals. Dedicated and very kind, hard working and the leaders of tomorrow. I know my dollars make these students' experiences possible. Sure I could support some other type of scholarships but I don't think it would be the same. Our student-athletes are idolized by smaller children and to watch them stop what they are doing and take the time to make that small person feel bigger than life is wonderful. Join, come watch your dollars enhance lives.
