BGSU Completes Third Round of MAC Championships

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The third round of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships was not kind to the Bowling Green State University men's golf team, as the Falcons slipped from third to the back of the nine-team pack after shooting 310 on Saturday (May 5) at Rich Harvest Farms.

BGSU had the highest-scoring round of any team on Saturday and ended the day with a 54-hole total of 906 (293-303-310). With 18 holes to play on Sunday, the Falcons are tied for eighth place with Akron, one shot behind Northern Illinois.

However, movement from the top to the bottom of the leaderboard will be possible for any team on the final day of the tournament. Only 11 shots separate second-place Eastern Michigan (895) with Akron and BGSU.

Kent State leads the field by 40 strokes and will almost certainly win its fourth consecutive conference championship.

Three of BGSU's five players are tied for 16th place with a 225 after Saturday's play.

Parker Hewit carded Bowling Green's best score on Saturday (76) to go along with rounds of 73 and 76 on Friday. Drew Preston shot a 77 on Saturday after posting back-to-back 74s to open the tournament. Chris Melvin joined the BGSU seniors with a 78 on Saturday to go with earlier rounds of 73 and 74.

Wes Gates ended the third round with a two-day total of 237 (77-79-81) while Charlie Olson rebounded to shoot 79 in the third round. His composite score is currently 240 (73-88-79).

The final round of the tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. The bottom three teams (NIU, BGSU, Akron) will tee off from the tenth hole, with groups of three beginning every ten minutes.

The other six teams will start their rounds from the first hole. Ball State, Miami and Toledo will have the first five tee times (8:00-8:40); they will be followed by Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Ohio from 8:50 to 9:30.
