Roos Adds Katrina Salinas to Falcon Fold
August 31, 2012 | Women's Basketball
Point guard from Central Arizona College joins BGSU program for 2012-13
Salinas, a 5-7 junior, is enrolled in classes at BGSU for the fall semester and will be eligible to play in the 2012-13 season. She has two years of eligibility remaining after playing two seasons at CAC.
“Katrina is a fantastic late sign for our program,” said Roos. “She has demonstrated a large amount of independence and maturity by going away from home, and that independence transcends into many positives on and off the basketball court. She brings a vast knowledge of the game to our team and adds immediate depth to our point guard position.
“Competing at this level has been a lifelong goal for Katrina, and I believe she is ready to contribute immediately. I am excited to have her become a member of our Bowling Green family.”
Salinas averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 assists per game last season, helping the Vaqueras of coach Denise Cardenas to the NJCAA national tournament for the 10th consecutive season. The team went 20-0 in league play, capturing the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title, with Salinas earning all-league third-team honors. CAC finished with an overall record of 31-3, captured a 10th-straight Region 1 championship and advanced to the national semifinals.
In addition to her point and assist averages, Salinas had 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. She made a total of 53 three-point field goals and shot 37 percent from long range and 83% from the free-throw line in 30 games.
As a freshman in 2010-11, Salinas played in 25 games, averaging 5.7 points and 3.2 assists. She shot 41% from three-point range, making 29 shots from beyond the arc. The '10-11 team went 28-6 and won the Region 1 title.
Salinas had more assists than turnovers in both seasons at CAC, including a 1.72 assist/turnover ratio last year.
A 2010 graduate of Sacramento H.S., she helped the Dragons to a 27-7 overall mark and a 10-0 league record in her senior year. She averaged 9.6 ppg, 2.2 apg and 3.2 spg in that '09-10 season, and shot 52% from three-point range.
Roos and her staff – assistant coaches Jesse Fleming, Ali Mann and Emily London and director of operations Monique Rosati – welcome back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from last season's 24-win team. BGSU adds a pair of freshmen to the active roster in Bailey Cairnduff and Miriam Justinger. Erica Donovan, a transfer from North Carolina State, joined the program in July, but will sit out the 2012-13 season per NCAA transfer regulations.
The 2011-12 Falcons earned an eighth consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season title, winning the league outright for the seventh time in those eight seasons, and advanced to the WNIT.
