The Bowling Green State University men's golf team shot a 36-hole score of 568 to lead the Cardinal Intercollegiate by two shots entering the final round. The host Louisville Cardinals sit in second (570), followed by Murray State (578) for third.
BGSU opened the tournament with a team score of 288, a season-low. That low did not last long, as the Falcons smashed that score with a 280 (-8) in round two.
Wes Gates, the same Wes Gates that won the John Piper Intercollegiate last week by 12 shots, is in familiar territory, leading the Cardinal Intercollegiate, entering Tuesday's action. Gates opened with a 70 in round one and followed that up with 67 in round two. He is currently seven under par and leads Northern Kentucky's Jones Brown and Austin Peay's Dustin Korte by two shots.
Gates now has a streak of seven straight rounds under par, dating back to round two of the Marshall Invitational on Sept. 10.
Last week at the John Piper, Gates did not get much support from the rest of the squad, but that doesn't seem to be a problem this week. Fellow senior Charlie Olson is tied for fifth, and four shots behind Gates, after carding a 71-70, his best two rounds of the season.
Chris Melvin had his best 36-hole effort of the season, finishing with a 74-71. The junior is currently tied for 20th.
Also competing for BGSU were a pair of freshmen. Zac Brammer (75-72--147) and Holden Pahr (73-76--149) sit in a tie for 34th and 47th among the 84-player field.
The third and final round will take place on Tuesday morning. Click HERE for tee times.
