Gates Leads Falcons to Second-Place Finish at Cardinal Collegiate

Wes Gates won his second tournament in as many weeks and helped the Bowling Green State University men's golf team finish second at the Cardinal Collegiate.
The 54-hole event featured 15 teams, with the host Louisville Cardinals winning the tournament by nine shots (858). BGSU was second (867), followed by Murray State (868), Arkansas-Little Rock (871) and Austin Peay (880) to round out the top five.
Gates entered the Cardinal Classic as the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week after capturing the John Piper Intercollegiate by 12 shots and being the lone player to finish the tournament under par. The senior extended his win streak to two, winning the Cardinal Classic by two shots with a 54-hole score of 209 (70-67-72). His 72 in the final round snapped a streak of seven straight rounds under par.
Fellow classmate Charlie Olson finished in a tie for 13th, scoring 217 (71-70-76). Junior Chris Melvin finished tied for 28th, carding a 221 (74-71-76).
A pair of freshmen rounded out the Falcons' lineup. Zac Brammer finished tied for 33rd (75-72-75--222) and Holden Pahr was 65th (73-76-82--231).
A total of 84 golfers competed in the tournament.
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a trip to Akron, Ohio for the Firestone Intercollegiate on Oct. 8-9.
