With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while dropping the Falcons to 1-2-1.
"Tonight was a tough night for us, and it was a disappointing performance," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "It starts with the coaches. We didn't have the guys prepared enough, and Wofford put us on our heels. The coaches need to be better, the players need to be better and we need to be more effective with our work."
The lone goal of the match came when Hurst received a through ball from teammate Nestor Jaramillo and chipped a shot over BGSU junior Michael Wiest at the 11:18 mark. That was all the offense Wofford 'keeper Andrew Drennan needed, as he made two saves to earn the shutout.
Wiest, a junior, had one stop in his complete-match effort for the Falcons.
Wofford enjoyed a 17-8 advantage in total shot attempts, but each side had only two shots on goal in the match. Jaramillo led all players with six total shots on the evening, while sophomore Danny Baraldi paced the Brown and Orange with three shots.
"This match was disappointing in that we just didn't show what we can do," said Nichols. "I can't fault our effort or our work, but our execution just wasn't good enough. We let Wofford dictate the game too much, we played on our heels too much, and -- until the end -- we just didn't have enough urgency within our possession. We need to better show our ability to keep the ball, move the ball and create chances ourselves.
"Again, I do feel like the guys worked hard, but we've got to work with a purpose. We have a big challenge on Sunday, and we will learn from tonight's game. Starting with the coaches, we will each look inside ourselves and think about what we can do better. We will have to be better on Sunday, and we will have to be better moving forward."
That Sunday match sees the Falcons remain in South Carolina to take on the host school, nationally-ranked CCU. The Chanticleers are ranked 19th in the country in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire poll. Kickoff for Sunday's match is 2:30 p.m.
FALCON NOTES
* Friday's second match in the CCU Invitational saw the host school defeat Florida Atlantic, 2-0. Sunday's first match will pit FAU vs. Wofford at noon, followed by BGSU vs. CCU at 2:30 p.m.
* Fifth-year senior Sean Hastings made his first start since coming to BGSU. Hastings, a transfer from Oakland University, made 10 starts for the Golden Grizzlies in the 2008 season. He transferred to BGSU prior to the 2010 campaign, but did not see action in a fall match for the Falcons until Saturday's (Sept. 1) home match vs. Marshall.
* Sophomore Jon Kumher has already played more minutes this fall than he did during all of last season. Kumher played a total of 302 minutes during his freshman campaign, and has been on the pitch for 304 minutes in the first four matches of 2012. Kumher has started three of this year's four contests after making a total of four starts last year.
* Similarly, senior Chris McLean already has seen more time this season than in 2011. Last year, McLean played a total of 129 minutes in seven appearances off the bench. This fall, the Toronto, Ontario, native has been on the pitch for 145 minutes, and has started three contests. In his BGSU career, McLean has made 15 starts.
* Junior Sean Sikich played four matches, starting them all, in 2011, and played a total of 380 minutes. He has identical numbers this season, having started all four matches and having played 380 minutes. Sikich is the lone position player to have been on the field for every second of every match this fall.
* Junior goalkeeper Michael Wiest also has played all 380 minutes this season to date. Wiest has allowed just three goals in four games this fall, for a goals-against average of 0.71. His career GAA is 0.97 in just under 1,500 minutes of work.
