Bowling Green State University Athletics
Associate AD Mary Ellen Gillespie Named Athletics Director At UW-Green Bay
October 17, 2013 | General
"I want to thank Bowling Green State University for the opportunity to be part of the Falcon family for the past seven years," Gillespie said. "BG is a special place because of the people and I have had the good fortune to work with incredibly-talented staff, coaches and students who work tirelessly to ensure Falcon student-athletes have a first-rate experience. My time here was amazing and I take many friendships and relationships with me as I begin a new chapter."
Gillespie has spent the last seven years at Bowling Green, joining the department in 2006 as Director of Major Gifts and was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Development in 2007. She was again promoted to Associate Athletics Director for External Relations in June 2010.
"This is a well-deserved opportunity for such a talented leader and she will be missed here at Bowling Green," Athletics Director Chris Kingston said. "I would like to publicly thank Mary Ellen for all that she has done for Falcon Athletics. She has made a lasting impact at BGSU and we wish her the best of luck."
In her current position she oversees an external relations staff of 30 and a budget of $7 million with primary responsibility for image and revenue including fundraising, marketing, promotions, game-day atmosphere, corporate sponsorships, ticket operations, rights fees, licensing, concessions, merchandising and athletics communication. She managed the fundraising campaign to build the $36 million Stroh Center on campus and helped achieve a 300 percent increase in annual giving to Falcon Athletics over her tenure.
In addition, Gillespie's duties at Bowling Green include direct responsibility for overseeing men's and women's cross country and the women's track and field team, including hiring and supervising coaches and approving budgets and schedules. She assisted the BGSU athletics director with searches for football, basketball, soccer and hockey coaches, and chaired university-wide search committees including leadership hires in Multicultural Affairs and the Student Union. She designed the curriculum for, and helped team-teach, a leadership course for freshman and sophomore student-athletes at Bowling Green.
